I just signed up with my Miata and a buddy is bringing his 2012 WRX. Just getting a head count on who will be there? This will be my first Autox in probably 7-8 years so I'm pretty excited! Mike
Bump this to the top. Registration is open and this is only two weeks away! Sign up and have some fun!
Spectating. It's my son's 4th birthday Saturday, so Sunday morning I plan on taking him for a bike ride, or cruise over, depending on windspeeds.
BTW, I saw you were running AS, and the BRZ is a CS car. You're making it harder on yourself! Glad to hear you had fun and it was good meeting you out there! Hope to see my twin at future events.
so what class should I have been in? My car only has lowering springs, strut tower braces, and sway bars.
With those simple mods, you need to be in STX. In CS (C Street) you can only change one sway bar, you can change the struts out, but not the springs, and I don't think you can have the strut tower braces. Now, if you want to play with the big boys in STX I have some parts you are going to need. Glad you had a good time. Welcome to the madness!
http://mnsubaru.com/threads/brz-frs-performance-parts-suspension-intake-exhaust.48800/ I also have a slightly used Stoptech brake kit. Stainless lines, slotted rotors, and Stoptech Street performance pads.
I already have drilled and slotted rotors and stainless steel brake lines too, I was on the fence of either getting a downpipe/EBCS/cold air intake/and a front mount intercooler, or just get coilovers...
I think I got a little messed up. If you are in an 08 STI, then you will fall into STU. (my class ) If you add an EBCS or a Front mount you are in ASP, (Jordon's class) and will be very under prepped. Suspension and tires will be a better first option. Sorry I don't have parts for that. If you are just going to play, do what you will. I was thinking BRZ...
It was just a really good day. The cars in the RTX class generally have more modifications, but even small changes like an ECBC can bump you from a stock class, through a mild mod class (like STU) into full on mod class like ASP. The RTX class is designed for cars that normally would be running with race slicks, and major modifications, but choose to run on street tires. The mods vary as the actual classes of the cars vary and then are PAXed accordingly, with an additional street tire add. This class is a local only class, and is not found at a National level.
good to know! Thanks for the info. though! It really helps. What mods do you have? Your times were really good.
Hey for the record...us RTX guys usually beat STU I'll have to blame it on my poor driving skills on Sunday. Glen ( @MNGman ) did put down some fast times though. If you're interested in racing the STI, you may want to try throwing the stock springs on and try racing in BS (B Street) for a while before modding. You may also want to start budgeting for a new shortblock...the STI's (and seemingly more 08+ STI's) are very prone to cracking piston ringlands. I cracked a ringland at 53k on mine. Stock, not stock, raced, not raced...happens to a lot of STI owners, but esp those who race. If/when you jump to STU, in GENERAL, you can add a catted downpipe, tune (NO changes to the boost level/tables), suspension (coilovers, sway bars, rear lower control arms...only certain ones are legal), and some other minor things like bushings, etc. The full rules are here. STU is a "ST" or "Street Touring" class. Start reading http://www.scca.com/solo/content.cfm?cid=44517
Jordan's right on the mod list for STU. Getting started in the more stock classes probably isn't a bad idea though if you can put those springs back on. I'd bet the reason STU beat up on RTX this weekend was that i think most of RTX was on old tires. Them new bridgestones are FAST.
I am most likely going to do coilovers and a tune plus a cattless downpipe with a FMIC, I will also up the boost. So the RTX class will probably be a better fit for me. But if I am already within a second of the faster RTX times I cant wait to see what i can do with my upgrades!
Well that's the point that Glen made. So you really think the 'stones are that much faster? Ryan W was actually on ZII's in the Evo and he put down a 47.0. That damn Evo was quick though and spooled up much faster than mine.
I would strongly urge you to reconsider FMIC and some of the other mods if you are serious about autox. But if it is just about having fun and modding the car how you prefer, I have zero qualms with that! I would highly recommend monitoring everything though - oil consumption, AFR's, check compression once a year, etc. IF you crack a ringland, it's best to catch it early before you grenade the whole engine. Ok, I'm done being a downer
Here is my best run from Sunday. It may help to see line choices. I was trying to be as tight on everything as I could. I think we are all just stating that if you are going to be involved in motorsports, and especially autocross, any modifications will have an impact on the class the car will run in. More power does not always equate to faster times. You can talk to just about anyone involved in any form of motorsport and the number one modification for going faster is seat time.
Sorry I didn't have a chance to speak to most of you! I was too busy getting beat in my own car (buddy of mine was co driving) Does anyone have any pictures or a link to some from the event? Mike
Mike, have you joined mnautox? I saw a lot of cameras. Usually people will post links there to their photo galleries. You will also find results and everything else. http://www.mnautox.com/forums/content.php
Link to photos was posted in this thread: http://www.mnautox.com/forums/showthread.php?22329-M1-M2-Videos/page2 Here is one of my favorites from the event: 2015M2_207 by The Pale One, on Flickr And another: 2015M2_212 by The Pale One, on Flickr
