ive been wanting to get back into mountain biking but dont feel like spending a ton of money. right now at my work (sports authority) we sell a mongoose bike called the tech 4. it has front and rear suspension(rock shocks) kenda tires, shimano gears. other stuff i know nothing about.. anyway i can get it for about 220 bux.... original retail was like 600 and now its on clearence.. does anyone know anything about this bike. or is there something else you would recomend for the money?
stay away from mongoose bikes, not the quality you want/need for an enjoyable ride. Get a trek or garyfisher hardtail (no rear suspension) and you'll acutually get more for your $$ since you're not paying for the extra rear suspension and that saved $$ goes into parts like the shifters and wheels. I'd recomend the trek 820 or the 3700 if you can swing it. I know because I work at a bike shop and have put hundreds of these bikes together. Got to scheels, we have a bike ad running thru saturday and the 820's are selling for $199.
Bikemasters off of hwy 7 and louisiana sells giants. That is what I have, and I love it... Talk to the owner and bring cash and you get sweet deals.
yeap i used to race bmx bikes when i was younger and i guess i want to try something new and a little more practical.
hella which scheels do you work at.. the only one i know of is in the EP mall and i think they only sell clothing and shoes. and yeah i was in eriks tonight but dave wasnt there so i figured id just come back. plus some of those canondales are badass.
I'll be there thursday night, 6-9PM. I'd love to help ya out. Stay away from Mongoose. 220 is not a good deal and it's just a crappy bike. target has it for around 350 Speaking of bikes, just two hours ago I bought a used Specialized Demo 9 Pro:yumyum: Yes, nine inches of travel!!! Finally back in the freeride world!:rockwoot: Shop around or come to me. I bought this 4800 bike for 1400, and it even has braided ss brake lines already.
I'm also in the market for something j500-700, anyone got something? I'd prefer a used dual sus but could be talked into a nicer hardtail
I like standard, 2 STA frames and counting, if i wreck this one I get too upgrade to a integrated headset 275lbs on a 20" FTW
buy my Trek 8700. I'll let it go for $200. Carbon fiber frame, Shimano lx front, xt rear. Front shock is elastomer so you may want to replace it, but it's still fine until you do. Bike is in great shape. Sold for >$1000 new.
Yeah shop around. I bought a 3k bike for 850 two summers ago lawl. I also have a 2000 specialized that still rocks. Try ebay.
i have a mongoose somthing or other...ive had it for 3 years, front/rear susp, it takes my abuse just fine
^^^LOL...yeah, sure it does. Another note. I know of a Demo 9 Pro frame in mint shape that is for sale. I don't know the price, but can find out if you're interested. I know it would be very cheap since it was originally purchased at employee proform price. just the frame...below is an example picture.
That bike is sick! I worked at the Eric's in EP in high school, and did bike assembly for a summer, as well. Too bad all my extra cash now goes into my car..
I work at the scheels in Minot ND so its far away, but there are a few in MN like mankato and st cloud that sell bikes.
my budget is around 300.. ive never done any serious mt biking before so i dont wana spend a crap ton the first time around.. if its something i like then ill invest more later on.. so basically do you have any suggestions. or can u cut me a deal on something? maybe bring one of those nice canondales down to 300? LOL
I will do my best.....I have a very nice specialized for 359.00, which i can cut you a deal on. It has a solid and beefy frame and nice fork on it. (We used one for urban assault for a whole season) and the frame withstood countless grinds and 5+ foot drops. I was impressed!
That 8700 CF Frame is a damned good deal @ $200 If I had the dough, I'd pick it up now... I'm pouring my bike fund into building a singlespeed with my old '01 Stumpjumper parts and upgrading the Stumpy to disk, new fork, and bunch of other fun shtuff... Otherwise I concur on Mongoose... they went from a killer bike back in the day, to absolute ****, and now they're a LITTLE bit better... go with the big guys for cheap; Specialized, Trek, and Giant will most likely be the most affordable.
The real question is what kind of biking are going to be doing, and what kind of biking do you want to get into. There are a ton of different styles of bikes for different things. I would recommend staying away from rear suspension in your price range. That doesn't mean you can't get a bike that is going to stand up, just means your legs are going to have to do a bit more work. Let me know what kind of biking you want to do and I'll try to lead you in the right direction. Scuba... how often do you ride the big bike and who did you get it from? I do quite a bit a freeriding myself.
Here's a pic of my ride, it's on the older side but it's bombproof and I have yet to find a bike I like as much. I outgrew my old clipless shoes and haven't sprung for new ones yet so I went back to toe clips for general commuter duty. This was the team frame/trials frame back in the mid 90's, handmade and ball burnished for 3 days and then anodized instead of painted. I want to find one in the same year but polished/clear anodized too.
riding style i want is just basic trail riding(no big drops or anything but itll still take a beating) and ill probably be inclined to take it to a bmx track a few times a season just because thats what i used to do. so basically i need something thats gonna hold up well. I realize i probably dont need full suspension but that bike at my work seemed like a good deal so i considered it.
Yeah, I bought a wal-mart Mongoose (D60r) full suspension bike in '99. I still have it and it's still in good shape. Yeah, it's not the best quality at all, but if you know the limitations it should be ok. I put a lot of miles on it, but nothing too hard core. I went riding in upper michigan with my brother one time, and I could have destroyed that bike in one afternoon if I tried to keep up on those trails... Last year I bought a Novara Float on sale from REI. Still pretty low end as far as mountain bikes, but for the type of riding I do it'll last quite a while.
I am in need of a new suspension fork for my Fisher Big Sur. The thing is old, on it's third drivetrain, and has over 8,000 miles on it. Old School elastomer suspension fork is totally shot. It goes more than 2/3 of the way down just by sitting on the bike, and bottoms out if you cough wrong. I don't really want to get a new bike, even though I know mine is pretty old, since I'm not sure if I'll really get back into it like I used to be, so for the time being, looking to replace just the fork. Any ideas on where I can get something for a good price. (FWIW the current one is a Rock Shox IndyXC)
You can get forks that are roughly x100000 better than your old indy XC now for really cheap. Pretty much anything you buy, staying within the major brands, will be far better. Google these places to start and see what kind of sales they have..... Jenson USA Pricepoint Cambria bike Beyond bikes Nashbar
I came from BMX also and our definition of riding hard is far different than your average XC (cross-country) guy. Maybe try start looking at bikes in the same ballpark as the Specialized Hardrock's. They have pretty beefy frames now with solid components, but they are at the lower end of the price range. I would be hesitant to go out and buy a used XC bike of any caliber without nowing what is going on. The problem with XC bikes is that they base models are probably going to be the beefy heavy models and from there they bikes get lighter and lighter. Basically, the higher end the bike, the more specific that bike is going to be for a certain type of riding. I just don't want to see you get a used bike from a friend that was the top of the line xc bike four years ago and then get all pissed with the rims are bending and you constantly are messing with the drivetrain to keep it running right. You might be able to get a last year's Specialized Hardrock for under 300 if you keep your eyes pealed at the shops. Heck, give Erik's a call and ask them what they have on sale. Here is the base new hardrock. I think it looks pretty cool and I know it's going to be decent bike.... http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=22089
I miss my Mtn bike. Thats where my roots are, hence my username. Road will have to suffice for now. Opus starts in a week! woowoo Anyone else on here road race?
well being that we are on the subject of Mtn bikes i dont mean to hijack your thread im just wondering if any one has a freeride/DJ hardtail frame or complete bike and you guys should check out intermtb.com its like a myspace for bikers sing up and maybe meet up and ride
Everyday I can....it's the only way for me to bike. I got it from a fellow erik's employee. I won't consider another xc bike unless I got back into racing, which isn't going to happen. PM me if you ever want to hook up. Evidentially Mammoth (chaska area) has some solid decents, etc....also, the EP area is full of big drops (5-10ft.) Lillydale is another....you can literally do crazy there. Decents so steep that if you fall you are dead meat:biggrin:
Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I just came across another demo 9 like mine if anyone is interested. 2006 pro model, 3,000 is the asking price, but I'm sure I could get him down to 2800.
