I am not going to waste time spewing what I have done. To make it simple: a lot. Late model 5sp swap. L28 engine (from 280z) with E88 head (10.5:1), ignition, etc, etc, etc. Yes the car is freaking dirty. It has sat unmoved (for the most part) for the last two years beside my dad's 73 (orange). So here are the pics: This is the one area of rust on the whole car:
I love the old Z's & ZX's My dad had an 82 280ZX, but had to give it up for the fam-van. I would like to get another one soon, we'll see btw, nice car y0!
Because that is gross and bastardized. If I went non inline six it would have been a SR20 conversion.
Because not all of life's questions are answered with unsophisticated barbarianism. This reminds me of people that do the same thing with an RX-7. "I don't get them little Japanese cars, let's throw a 350 small block at it!" Good solution, keep using the same ****ing engine that GM has failed to evolve for the last 5 ****ing decades. Why learn something new?
Considered it. But a waste of time and money. And if something goes wrong, I am waiting a long time for parts to come over. Unless I pay to have parts overnighted from Japan  If I do another engine swap it will either be an L28 turbo or an SR20. But as it stands I am happy. It is bumper to bumper with the current 350Z. Which is good enough with what I currently have. Especially on the stockish brakes (Hawk pads, Goodrich steel braided, turbo master cylinder and new rotors).
LOL Yeah I was a little surprised when I walked in the garage for my first time home in a year. There's a hella of a lot of Eggos in there!
Not everyone that does a V8 swap is a hick or hates Japanese cars, the kits are easy and cheap. I threw an LQ9 in mine because its cheaper to get power out of it then a turbo setup. Yeah that LS7 is pretty unevolved...
To each their own. I have been in some nicely done small block Z cars. It's just not really my thing.
I this for sale? Did I miss a price? I'm looking to trade my bike for a fun car. I have a 2000 Ducati 900ss listed on craigs. http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/mcy/469080683.html
Nope not currently for sale. Not sure if I could ever part with it. Although now that I have bought my first house, it's amazing how much my "priorities" have changed. The Duck looks great!
Looks good, my Dad is a huge Datsun fan, thats why we own 3 early 70's 240's and a 260. We are prepping one for ITS and vintage racing for this upcoming summer, already have a cage welded in and the car will be going to Milwaukee for paint hopefully b4 the snow flys. If you ever need and Z parts we have huge Tupperware bins full or original parts and two flawless dashes out of two 240's. The are fun cars, we are trying to figure the suspension system we want to go with right now.
Oh and I'm not sure if you have or have ever looked into the Nissan competition racing oil pan for the 240's but my pops got his already and they look to be worth every dollar!! Nice stuff and it increases the capacity allot if I remember correctly.
RBDETT to be exact my friend did somenthing somewhat similar but to an eariler skyline.. a 1978, changed the rea end from a 280z etc into it.. We were the first ones in Australia to have a Haltech computer designed for it... I will post some pics later... painted it for under $200 with a garden fence sprayer... oh yeah.. also do a search for a guy named Darius.. he is into bikes etc.. has one of them with a blown 350 chev.. things smokes gixxers while smoking the tires...
I THINK, I bought that. I remember it being on my list, it's made by NISMO, I believe it has traps built into it. I know I bought a new pan, and put the NISMO Turbo oil pump on it, but I can't remember if I bit the bullet on buying the pan...I am thinking I passed on it.
 I still have the emails we exchange on January 26, 2006 regarding the Z. If I end up selling it, I will stick to my promise and contact you first Once I get it back here (probably April or May) we can go for a cruise.
props to the first person to go rb26dett.. some1 should do it.. and maybe a awd setup would be interesting..
It's been done. http://www.superstreetonline.com/featuredvehicles/130_0706_1971_datsun_240_z/index.html There is one somewhere in Australia or something that they did a powertrain/awd conversion. I can't imagine the time and price needed for that.
If you are interested, here is the long winded story: I bought it one mile from where my parents live. I bought it from the original owner's best friend. He was getting rid of some of the cars to buy a vacation home in the Caribbean. Among his collection was a 996 GT2 that he would regularly drive. The car had 70k some original miles on it. It was a L24 (2.4 inline six) with a four speed transmission. It had all sorts of crazy built in late 70's radar detectors, with detectors in both front and rear. It came with an extra wheel and literally every single receipt, note, service, window sticker, etc. He had already disconnected all the emissions stuff (airpump) and had switched the ****ty emissions carbs to Weber DGVs. Unfortunately, I think my mom threw it away as "junk." A family friend and guy we went to church with built and raced Z's. I told him I wanted to learn, so he made me hang out in the garage and taught me how to do various things. Initially, I just redid the brakes (new rotors, Hawk pads, Goodrich braided lines, Turbo master cylinder), suspension (eibach springs/tokico struts, all sorts of energy suspension bushings, a rear sway bar, strut bar (front and rear). Then I went autox'ing. They had a g-track set up and I had some r-compounds on. Oil starvation (from the g-track) toasted the engine. So then I bought a junkyard L28 (from a 280z) with flat top pistons. I had my e88 head rebuilt, cleaned, etc. I sent the block to an engine shop, they dipped it, resealed it, painted it, installed the ARP rodbolts, etc. Slapped the engine and head together. I also picked up a late model five speed and a 3.90 rear end to replace my 3.43. After we put the engine in, we switched the points distributor to a Mallory Unilite setup, added a Crane ignition system, etc. I purchased Motorsports Auto headers and exhaust system, we sprayed and wrapped the headers and part of the exhaust and built a custom heat shield. I dropped the Weber DGV carbs in place of some early model SU side draft carbs, I had Arizona Z Car send me a rebuild kit and different needles/nozzles, threw airhorns on and then eventually added K&N filters. Interior we added, a custom harness bar, Corbeau seats, a new tach, harnesses, stereo, push button start, d-shapped wheel, etc. Various other things, upgraded the oil system and fuel system. Dropped the gas tank, had it dipped, cleaned and checked for leaks, added a Holley fuel pump and RRFPR. Bought a new oil pan, added the Turbo oilpump, replaced any hoses we could with new ones. Obviously, their were other things, wheel bearings, etc, etc that were replaced. The most difficult part was time, a lot of this involved multiple trips to junk yards and machine shops, hours on dial up internet reading, and the pesky little things...for example, my odometer doesn't work anymore because I switched the transmission and rearend set up. And it's annoying because the piece that makes it work is like $3. But I have to go dig around in junkyards and look for engine and rearend codes to buy the right little plastic gear that makes it work. The reason it hasn't been driven in two years is because after college I moved to Minneapolis. I lived in Uptown with a single parking spot (uncovered) and refused to park it outside. So my parent's, thankfully, let me keep it at their place. With the assumption that I would eventually move it. Now that I own a house, I can, BUT, the contractor has taken over my garage currently AND I want to give it a full going over and spend a few days with a mechanic tuning it, checking fluids, etc, so I don't find my ass stranded in Black River Falls, Wisconsin. So that's mostly, the story. Or what I can remember at this point.
You should come to some of the Z car club meetings next summer, its a group of older guys so sometimes it can get boring but we're looking for more sub 50 year olds that want to go on cruises and such.
I dont think the can looks that bad on it, it could be alot larger, but its not, and i HATE the look of the sideways chambered type muffler.
Thanks. That's exactly why I had to go with a canister style one (which makes it borderline fart can). I still haven't found exactly what I am looking for. But I will eventually. I may just mount a glass pack or inline muffler further up stream and then weld a tip on to the back. But who knows.
looks bad ass dude! makes me wish my dad wouldnt have sold his 280zx when he bought his 350z... i miss that car...
sweet ride man, my brothers and i are working on his 83 zx turbo. rite now, we're in the process of putting on a fmic and add a bov. we recently put on some new suspension.
It's going up for sale... Location: Minneapolis Price: $6,200 The Story: I bought it from the original owner's best friend in 2000. The car had 78k some original miles on it. It was a L24 (2.4 inline six) with a four speed transmission. It had all sorts of crazy built in late 70's radar detectors, with detectors in both front and rear. It came with an extra wheel and literally every single receipt, note, service, window sticker, etc. He had already disconnected all the emissions stuff (airpump) and had switched the 73 emissions carbs to Weber DGVs. In 2003, I did all of the rebuild stuff. But, I was busy in college so it just stayed parked in my parent’s garage (in Indiana). I graduated college and left the car parked in there garage from May 2005 through May 2008. The car was never started or moved during that time. In May 2008, I finally decided to bring it to Minneapolis. I had the car taken to the best import shop in Fort Wayne, Indiana. They dumped the old gas, put new plugs, new battery, new oil, etc in the car. It started on the first push of the start button. They checked the carbs and they were still fully synched. I then drove the car 11 hours straight, from Indiana back to Minnesota. Once here, I drove it around for awhile, took it to a Z show, but for the most part it’s been sitting in my garage. I haven’t driven it in over a month. So it’s time to let it go. The Engine: Swapped dipped/rebuilt L28 block with flattop pistons (engine out of 280Z) ARP rodbolts E88 head from a 240Z, dipped, rebuilt Crane Uni-lite distributor (get’s rid of the points system) Crane Hi-6 ignition box Crane ignition coil Taylor spark plug wires Motorsports Auto (MSA) 6-3-2-1 Header/wrapped/temp coated MSA full 2.5in exhaust Rebuilt (Arizona Z car) dual SU carbs with K&N filters mounted over airhorns Holley Redline fuel pump NISMO turbo oil pump Driveline: Swapped late model 5sp transmission 3.43 rearend was replaced with a 3.90 rearend The Suspension: Eibach lowering springs Tokico struts/shocks Energy Suspension urethane bushings MSA front and rear sway bars MSA front strut tower bar Various new OEM suspension components H&R spacers and extended studs The Brakes: Hawk Metallic brake pads New rotors Rebuilt brake drums Stainless brake lines High boiling point fluid Interior: Dual Corbeau Forza seats, with custom made slide rail adapters Corbeau four-point harnesses Custom harness bar CD player/new speakers New carpet and mats (2008) Push button start/toggle switches for ignition and fuel MSA d-shaped wheel Monster Tach in oem tach location/shift light on steering column (used as redline indicator) Original OEM dash, with absolutely no cracks, I have been offered upwards of $500 for my dash alone at various Z events Wheels: Two piece Watanabe RS8, staggered, 16x8 and 16x7 Stripped, powdered in 2008 Tires (have 300 miles on them), Dunlop Direzza DZ101 I have over $2,000 in the wheels/tires/spacers Also included, original dealer installed slotted mags with tires Body: MSA front airdam/spoiler Engine bay and wheel wells were all stripped to bare and then treated with POR-15 rust inhibitor Frame rails and battery box (most common) show absolutely no rust, will provide before/after pictures New floor pan on driver’s side All glass is perfect Issues: Odometer reads 88,000 miles, when I switched the rearend, the odometer/transmission plastic gear thingy didn’t match. Based on the trips I have taken, I can safely say that the car has had less than 3k miles put on it in the last five years. People will follow you home, harass you at the gas station, etc Paint, the original owner had it repainted 16 years ago, paint is probably a 7.5/10 Various nicks in the paint Body is extremely solid, I notice two areas that have been repaired during the painting, one spot in the wheel well and the fender arch. I would still give the body a 9/10 (If I were to completely restore/paint I would patch/replace quarter panel) It’s loud
