Went out and moved the car this AM so the wife could back out of the garage. Only needed to move a couple feet so I didn't let it warm up.

Noticed a suspicious Hershey syrup trail leading from where the car was parked to where it presently resides. Looked underneath and creamy oil (I *think*) was dripping from the bottom center of the engine bay.

I'm hoping the pan gasket simply contracted with the cold but I'm concerned there may be more serious issues afoot.

Anyone experience something similar to this before?

    Thanks in advance.

    Fug me.

Yessir. That was my other thought as the steering felt super heavy but everything was cold.

I'm going to let it sit until it warms up a bit tomorrow and then check all the fluid levels.

IIRC there isn't a gasket per se on the oil pan, just a layer of Fujibond. Might also be coming from the gearbox/front diff, the drain plug for those is right in that area as well. When I changed out my trans oil when cold it had a very cloudy look to it. Motor oil tends to be darker colored unless it's mixed with coolant and/or is very new. Subaru factory PS fluid is red IIRC, as it's ATF.

unless they changed things since the phase I stuff.....there definitely is a gasket there.

boy, I can't think of a situation that would cause the symptoms that you describe. I'd say let it run for a bit, and see if you can't slide something under where it's dripping so you can identify the fluid more accurately. a piece of white plastic or something.....so you can see what color it is, and see what it smells like.

there is no gasket, just a layer of fuji bond like brian said, it may just be a phaze 2 thing, but my car is the same way and its a late phaze 1. i'll look tomorrow to be 100% about the older ones

Thanks everyone. Here's a picture of the romantic explosion my s00bie made on my driveway. Primary pool is about 4" across so not much was lost. CSI Saint Louis Park says it is motion lotion (Pennz Syn).

I let it thoroughly warm up and drove around the neighborhood. Upon return there didn't seem to be anything new coming out.

I will call Tonka Subie at first light Monday to discuss. I spoke with Putty today...he talked me off a ledge after fearing I'd murdered my toy.

Is that an easy thing for a tech to diagnose/repair? I'm well inside my warranty...just wondering how long it would need to be at the dealership.

Could be a double gasket on the oil filter as well. Those usually leak RIGHT away tho.

Here you go chux, subaru doesnt offer a gasket for the oil pan, but i do believe aftermarket places like napa do offer one, but from subaru its just RTV. EDIT: just called carquest, they DO offer a gasket, so aftermarket companys do use a gasket, subaru uses RTV

Ding, ding ding! We have a winner.

Took it into Morrie's this AM. Turned out that the Motortrend filter Jiffy Lube had installed went kaput in the cold. Had about 4k miles on it.

Thanks everyone for massaging my paranoia.

yea, I was just flipping through my quick reference guide.....and I don't see a gasket listed for any EJ motor. But they do have it for the EA82s. don't see anything listed for the EA81s either, but the listing is already pretty abridged....

I know I got a nice cork Fel-pro one from Advance when I put on the new pan. and I'm glad I used it. and IIRC martin said that when they did the turbo kit on Ryans green imp he had an oil pan gasket for it too.....
