Cool, let me know how it works out, I have been pondering on using the same filter.

Sure! The best thing about this type of container is that I don't have to disassemble it to check to see how much oil has been collected. I can just pop the hood and look for it. :D I hope the PCV line is the best line to adapt this thing onto.

Update: I took this picture after a ~60 mile round trip to the Speedlab meet today. I only went WOT once in third gear; the rest of the drive was no more than 50% WOT. It seems that I may have to empty this jar once every oil change.

No, thick plastic. On the plus side, it's designed to hold over 90 psi for air tools like an impact wrench. On the negative side, it is only tested to handle 150 degrees. I'll keep my hood vent open to keep the engine bay temps down.

I like these; very practical and easy upgrade that everyone should do. Mine is a little different but I might switch to this setup; very clean install! Currently mine just vents to atmosphere and drips down below my break master cylinder... very messy :p

Ignorance WAS bliss; but now you know the truth... the truth of whats really going on in your PCV system! Most ppl driving their Subarus this winter has that same crap in ther PCV hoses; they just don't know it :p

That is oil and water mixing. Condensation from the temperature changes forms, then that water mixes with oil, and now you get a nice mayonaise solution in your oil and PCV system.

Thankfully now your catch can is gathering up most of it before it makes its way back into your oil or down your intake. An oil change over to Mobile 1 will help also.

This is why I suggested this mod to everyone :)

Herc, although it looks like cappuchinno, I don't think any liquids from my car contains caffeine. LOL! Hey, where does sulfer come from? The engine oil?

Morgan, thanks for the tip. That's what I figured it was but was unsure. I use Amsoil and I'm a believer of its use as my engine oil. Do you figure this stuff is a byproduct of Amsoil? Maybe this thread can help others decide on what to buy/do with their tax returns. :)

It is not a byproduct of Amsoil. If anything that's prolly helping you more than you know :) In 4 days I prolly would have almost filled that little bottle up [xx(] I only use Castrol GTX and just vent my PCV system to one of those breather filters; I then pulled out the PCV valve and replaced it with an extra bolt I had.

This is why I said yours was a very clean install! LOL Mine just squirts that junk out the breather filter and down onto the main crossmember :p Think I'll have to upgrade to this soon!

Morgan, I have heard of setups that use a small filter in place of the breather hoses that caused buildup inside their engine. I assume breather hoses connect into the intake tract because as the engine is making vacuum, it draws pressure away from the engine. :???: Probably I'm wrong or it doesn't matter.)

It's not sulfur then. :)

Limits
Diesel - For on road 500 ppm - (staged 50) - 15 ppm
Gas - right now it is 300 ppm and this year the limit on gas is 30 ppm. I was working on a refinery in Long Beach that was putting in a new DSU (Desulfurization unit), and a new catcraker to meet this standerd. I think Marithon here on the east side of town had some fun too...

Funny thing is this is because of the clean fuels reform to decrease NOx, CO, S, bla bla bla, but which in adding ethonal to the gas it goes back up over the limits... Second to this even though the limit now is 30 ppm for gas it will not be fully realized untill all the stored gas is used up, so end of the year or so. The rule is some time in 2005, so for most manufactures that means Dec 31st....

And why do I remember this crap....
http://www.epa.gov/otaq/fuels.htm

Anyways back to the topic. About how long did it take you to do this? I will probably do something simular after it warms up a bit!

I suppose enough sulfur is good, but too much is bad for the environment. I'm an uninformed consumer that can care less. :p

Well, from start to finish, this project lasted me 3 days. I researched and drove around a lot more than needed on what to get and where to find it. The actual install took 1 hour. I was trying to figure out how to rig my PCV line to allow the filter to fit and positioned in an up-right angle. I ended up using all OEM parts/hoses and the parts I purchased. It looks clean, and I like it that way. All I have to do to drain the liquid is twist the jar off of the unit and empty. :D

I kept all the hoses on and ran them down over to the side. Air drafts over the filter and helps. There is pressure in the crank case that does force junk up the tubes. I can tell its getting out through there cuz the hose leading to the filter has that lovely mayonaise junk in it and the filter just drips with the stuff [xx(]

However with the system you did I could put a new PCV valve in and then just use the water seperator. To me it sounds like a superior setup. Can't wait to instal it on mine.... now I just gotta finish stripping parts off this "Free" Loyale and get my Subaru back in the garage :D

That's great! I would like to see it installed and how well it works on your Subaru, Morgan. You sure you can find room to install this in your engine bay? ;)

Ok, there has been some interest in this modification. I'll post what is needed to make this for yourself. There are many approaches that can be taken to safely and cleanly install this oil catch can.

Notes
*The PCV hose inner-diameter size is either 5/8" or 3/4" (I found out 1/2" didn't fit until I was in the middle of the install)
*The PCV valve has a flared end that fits into the PCV hose and the other end is a threaded 3/8" male
*The PCV valve's air flow is directional, so use the arrow on it to direct your install before you tighten anything down
*The PCV hose (after unplugged only from PCV valve) can be rotated for adjustment
*The air/water seperator comes with two female threaded holes and can have the PCV valve's male screwed into it
*I recommend you get everything in place and tightened before you slip the hose over the fittings for ease of tightening.

Below is the instructions on my install (remember, you can use your own method and parts to acheive the same result)

This what you'll need based on the picture:
1 each - air filter/water seperator [Menard's or equivalent]
2 each - brass or polyethelene fittings (1/2" barbed; 3/8" threaded) [Hank's Hardware; maybe Menard's or Home Depot; not Ace Hardware]
1 roll - thread seal tape (optional) [Any hardware store]
2 feet - 1/2" gasoline/air hose (you can cut any extra length off that you don't need) [Checkers or equivalent]

Connection Procedure: motor-->OEM 2" hose-->OEM splitter for PCV hose and air line-->PCV hose-->PCV valve-->air/water seperator-->fitting-->your length of 1/2" hose-->barbed end of fitting-->threaded male into intake manifold...

...Wash your hands. Pop open a can of ice cold beer and drink. (minors: drink juice or pop instead) ;)

The 1/2" barbed end of the fittings is too small for the (OEM) PCV hose. If you want to have the air line to be the same inner diameter as the (OEM) PCV hose, instead, you will have to get two fittings that are 3/8" threaded male and 5/8" [or 3/4" because I don't know the exact size] barbed male and a hose that the bigger sized barbed male ends will fit into.

These sizes are for the RS motor, but I assume all EJ series motors uses the same PCV hose size.

Yes! The only problem with a stock intake is that you'll have to be more conservative for space with the extra tubing and the oil catch jar. Let me see your engine bay the next time I see you. I'll give you some pointers. :)

I probably still have the pictures at my home computer. I took them off because they were taking up my "image manager" space. I'll try to remember. :)
