cage was done by Graham Evans Motors / CPD Racing goal is to have the car mostly complete for the ice races - I will update this as I make more progress
Looks good. I take it you are going to re-spray the inside of the car to cover the cage and such? Did you ever weigh your car gutted so you can go back after you are finished to see how the weight has changed? Russ
yep, the inside is getting painted - I need to fit the dash, drop the gas tank and do a bunch of other prep things first. I never weighed the car. The cage weighs about 200lbs. I've estimated the car will weigh within 50lbs of stock when it's done
wouldn't bother with a cage for rallyx. I don't know if I'll be ready for 09 at all - it depends on if I can find a cheap 2.5i powerplant to swap in to run Open Light. Otherwise I might try and haul it out to a NASA event or two
You still need to PM me your address... Great progress, though. The fabrication looks first class!!!
i tried to kent but couldn't get a very good angle/lighting in the garage last night. I'll roll it out and get a shot with some more light. you guys did a fantastic job on it!
I sent you a pm back, didn't you get it? I figured it would be easier for me to come pick the stuff up
Speaking of garage, what's with the donkey in the last pic?! Looks great Carl. Looks like GEM did a fantastic job.
Open light should be an awesome class and a great way to start out! im glad they came up with that! Keep in mind too, Team O'Neal school gets you some coef. too!
i may do the primitive racing school instead (cheaper, less coefficients though). primitive school + nemadji + both regional rallies at ojibwe should be enough to complete the novice license
not really. I might occassionally drive it to a car meet or firestone otherwise it'll be locked up or riding on a trailer
1st class... hmmm some of those welds are a little so so... other then that Carl you are a crazy mother... looks awesome mate
WOW I can see clearly just how commited you are my friend. I guess I won't have any second guess's about taking another ride with ya after seeing those "X's." Congrat's. That is some serious bar's. I know how to reference when and if I do need one of them in my car. Keep us posted, this will be a great project to observe.
nate, some of the welds are not the prettiest but they are all STRONG which is what counts. basically if I wanted pretty show car welds, I could have paid for pretty show car welds but I wanted a "cheap" functional cage that was done correctly. We got a lot of progress done tonight - I will post pics in a few minutes. a huge thanks to Dave, Emily, Andrew, and Joel for coming over and working on the car! you guys did some awesome work, I really appreciate it!
is that secondary a pillar bar really needed? I've always wondered how they paint the tubes once welded inside the car, must be a ton of masking needed
updates from tonight dave cutting the dash to fit the cage dave and emily fitting the dash siliconed shut the holes where the cage passes through the firewall into the strut towers pulled the driveshaft rear diff and crossmember ready to be dropped so the fuel tank can be removed disassembled the rear suspension, removed the rear brake lines, removed the ebrake assembly doorcard modified to close over bars dave, emily, and andrew working on the car done for the night major thanks to dave, emily, andrew, and joel for coming over and wrenching!
well yes and no - depending on what the car is built for. to meet rally america's requirements (FIA driven cage design) that bar is needed painting isn't too bad. mask off the glass, pull the door cards, a little masking on the side of the car and it should be ready to go. i'll be doing rustoleum primer and then rustoleum high performance enamel
So what is the welding project you have for me on Sunday? Maybe we can look at the tall rocker pass through jackstand posts in the near future.
I actually want to get the welding done tomorrow if possible (gonna see if I can't borrow someone else's welder). basically patch some small holes in the rear of the car and finish the dash support (since the knee bar is moved forward the stock uprights that the hvac/radio attach to are floating freely right now - they need to be bridged to that knee bar)
I just meant from the point of view back in Australia with rally or auto stuff that would probably not pass tech inspection without some cleaning up... ot sure how they are over here... but it was only a couple.. I think the cage and car look fantastic... fantastic endevour
then stop buying cheap mods and selling them and buying more and selling them and just pay it off....
Damn, all these serious projects going on. I need to get a shell so I can join the party. Looking good. That car didn't know what it was in for, lol.
then have fun, if you get a cage like that you wont be enjoying it everday..takes me like 5 mins to get in an out of the car lol
im almost tempted to put a roll cage in my project car..just for the safety...but..i dunno..i kinda wanna keep the interior so i may just say F that
