Will a bill of sale protect me if the buyer doesn't title the car and it gets ticketed or towed after buyer takes ownership?

Who would be responsible in that situation?

Can I just use a free bill of sale off the internet or do I need a MN specific bill of sale?

I do have the title and yes I know I can run to the DMV with the buyers but I won't be able to do that without taking time off of work or go on Saturday, but I need this gone now. This is for a non running car so you never know what they're gonna do with it.

You should take down the buyer's info (DL, insurance, address, B-day,
number and such) and got to the DMV website and tell them you sold the car and to whom.

The little cut out on the bottom of the title should work as a Bill of Sale. But just in case, you should write up and little receipt for both parties. Things like "AS IS" and "No Warrenty" and "Off Road Use Only, you must tow" should be in there if the car is modded. (or if not).

Predavore's got it - take down the buyer's information including the driver's license number, address and a working phone number.

My brother sold his car and the guy started stealing gas with it - all my brother had was the guy's AIM name because the rest of the info he had mailed into the DMV without keeping a copy of the info until he knew for sure the title had been transferred. It all worked out in the end, but it was a huge mess for a few days!

A bill of sale is not enough. A bill of sale will get your ass hauled into court for vehcile violations and be a massive pain in the ass to get rid of.
It is a goddamn nightmare because guilty people make this claim too.

Yes, you need to use that bit on teh bottom of your title and send it to DPS or use their website as others have mentioned.

I (or more like my mom) had this happen to us.

    Story:

When I sold my first civic (which was in my mom's name) I kept that bottom part of the title sale. The bitch moved to California and racked up tons of parking tickets. There was a warrant out for my mom's arrest because of this chick. It got sorted out in the end but the only thing that saved us was that bottom part.

Moral of the story: Keep the bottom part. :)
