you might to have to replace the whole axle. if anything gets in the CV you're going to have to dissasemble, clean, regrease and repack with grease which can be tricky.

I know because I did the same thing. ended up with a new axle. If you want a hook up to where to get a reman axle cheap if it comes to that I can help you out. I got mine at 1/3rd price from a guy who remanufactures them for subaru. I paid $100, subaru wanted $240

Thats might what it will come too. I'm going take it up the the shop tomorrow and we are going to disassemble the axle and re-grease everything with the new boot. what are some precations i need to look at when i am disassmbling this? what should i look for as far as any damage that could have already taken place that will let me know whether i need a new axle or not? any special way to put them back on to keep them clean? The guy who is helping me has done this before so we know how to do it but any tips would help. I called up bloomington btw and they closed at like 6. what are the chances that subaru has one of these in stock at any of their locations? does the wrx's boot fit the same? We might go try to find one at a junk yard of a totaled rex or somthin if it fits. what about a 2.5? thanks

subaru doesnt make a reman for the sti yet, and chances are slim to none that any have them in stock (i know because i work at one!) and i dont know what axle you were looking for zach, but subaru remans are somthing like 180 RETAIL, now you get 20% off that. they might have a boot and clamps, but they are tricky to put on, pm driftin240, he'll know what to do.

i was looking for a 02 2.5Rs axle in 2003, they didnt have anything in stock reman and could only get me a new one. I got it from a guy who does all sorts of axles, he says he does jobs for subarus. I dunno about STis though, but he sent me a really nice axle for my RS for a good price. He is also a guy lots of people get 323 turbo axles from.

I still have my old 2.5RS axle laying around if you need anything, but the outer boot is trashed.

There is a grease kit from Subaru with the bands and the grease, BP and Mtka both have it.

well this was the biggest nightmare in the world and i dont really feel like explaining it but short story is we ended up having to replace the whole axle. not fun. its all fixed now but i'm kinda mad cuz the guys at mtka subaru said the closest place that the cv boot was in chicago and i had to overnight it but i guess bloomington had 3 in stock....

So your saying the reman. axle pineapple sold us at 11pm for the 04 STI is actually a wrx axle? How much of a diameter difference is it between the two? Is this enough of a problem to justify pulling it and getting a new sti axle?
I know on my old leggy the FWD had thicker axles then the turbo AWD ones but they are interchangeable

I had to do this one already and Subaru has the wrong part # and part. Found one at Napa that’s for a sun fire that is a perfect match. Get that and a grease kit and clamps. And then I went to the library and found instructions on how to do it. It’s not hard at all.

I have this sinking feeling this happened to me. Found a lot of grease on my brake caliper while I was putting on my coilovers today.

yep, you have a bad cv if you are getting grease on your caliper. dont wait until it fully blows because then you'll have grease all over and a bigger mess to clean up. It happened to me, grinding shearing noise for about 30 seconds then no sound, look in the wheel well, no cv boot left, grease everywhere. At this point you may need to replace your axle since its been exposed and crap has been getting in there.

You will know when you take it apart weather or not you need a new axle. When you look at the bearings when you take them out you can see if there is damaged or not to them. you can get new bearings if the are cracked up or chipped up from sand but if the part ware the bearings sit is damaged you need a new axle. And that’s big $$. The grease is a pain in the butt to clean up so I would do it as soon as you can or find out. Its only $35 in parts I think so that cant hold you back from doing it. Look up all data at the library and it will tell you haw to do it from start to finish
