Specificly, Duplicolor Gold Engine Enamel. It's teh same stuff I used on my engine parts. It is gold, but not too deep of a gold.

I love that look. So how much of that stuff do you buy, and do you just spray the hell of your wheels or is there some preparation first, or what...? yyup, i'm a noob.

The wheels were painted white when i got them, so i just roughed them up with some sand paper. i bought 1 can of paint and 1 can of clear coat. i put 2 coats of gold down then put down 2 coats of clear. 1 can was the perfect amount for 4 wheels

400 grit wet/dry sand paper. Sand them dry. They should look hazy.
Next, I recommend dusting it down with 2 coats of Duplicolor sandable black primer. It's good stuff, dries fast, and will help the paint bond better
2 coats of the gold will work, but I prefer to do 2 light coats, then 1 medium coat of it. The first two coats if applied too 'generously' will run. And with this paint, it makes the paint look terrible. With the first two coats, pay particular attention to nooks and crannies. Don't over fill them, but make sure they are covered. The last coat should be applied with the wheels on teh ground facing up.
After this, same applies for the clear. 2 thin coats, and one thicker one.

LET THEM DRY OVER NIGHT! This is imperative. And every person that has brought their wheels here has been told this. If you put them on your car when they 'feel dry to the touch' you WILL mess it up. The paint is still soft at this point, it has a tendancy to peel, rip, etc...and if you do get them on without marring the surface, you will ruin them on the freeway when road dirt gets stuck in the paint.

Also, after drysanding with 400grit, make sure to wipe the wheel down with Metal Prep. Do not use brake cleaner or TB cleaner. A can of metal prep is like 5 bucks, and it will last far beyond this project.

Paint is paint. But yes, the metal prep will ensure it lasts a little longer.

Cool I'm gonna have to try that on my G/Fs GTI. Hopefully it'll stand up good enough so I dont have to spend a few hundred on powder coating.
