Hello everyone. I just got a 2016 Subaru WRX. This is my first subaru. I've owned Honda's all my life and 1 nissan. This is definitely a different car with a different feel and mechanics. Is there any thing else I should know about this vehicle in terms of issues? I did some searches and there's some I heard across the board with having to clean the intake manifold from the carbon build up, but I have yet to see many of these issues arise. Possibly this is still a new platform. Loving this car so far!!!
All direct injection engines will have carbon buildup but you won't have to worry about it for a while. If you notice stumbling at low rpm or rough idle in a few years you might want to look at your intake valves and get them walnut blasted. Otherwise I have heard the new FA20DIT is a good engine and don't seem to have the same problems as the old EJ at least when it comes to the stock tune. People have been blowing them up when modding though so use your head and do research before getting bit by the mod bug.
Oh yes, of course. First thing that came off were the summer tires and putting on the all seasons. Will be posting the summer tires for sale on here soon. I have no plans to mod the car, except for suspension once those wear out. I'm very glad the new engine won't have the same problems as the older EJ engine. So far lovin' the gas mileage! Pics coming soon!
Thank you for the warm welcome guys. I'm sure I will have questions down the road. 1 more question, does everyone that owns a 15/16 wrx have a reverse issue where you have to go into first before going into R. This is with the lever pulled up. Thanks again guys!
Yep. Continental DWS 06's. Loved the dunlops that came with it during the 25 miles I rode on it, before I took them off. Sidewalls seem to be stronger on these DWS's than the older models.
Don't sell the summer tires, and if you still can exchange the all-seasons for winter tires. I strongly recommend it, I am no expert but I highly doubt that the best all season tire can provide better grip than even an entry level winter compound. It's your car though, congrats and welcome, there are meets on Tuesday nights at Stouts Pub.
Normally I say all seasons are "no seasons" but I put the Conti DWS on my fiancee's X3 and they were great in the snow and not squirmy like snow tires when it's dry. I would personally still get two separate tires but most people don't really need them when a good tire like DWS exists.
Just looked them up, they look like a great tire indeed. I would be curious about their temperature rating, if they can handle our extreme temp drops and provide great traction they nailed it.
I have some p7's by pirelli on my car right now. Never had a problem in the snow. The traction is really solid.
In general cars can be hard to go into reverse sometimes because it doesn't have a synchro like your forward gears. Going into 1st (which has a synchro) will align the collar and dogs so it you can put it into reverse. Next time it happens you can also just try to put it back in neutral and lift the clutch pedal for a second (turning the input shaft a bit) and then try reverse again and it should go in.
Lol, it is kind of funny that even in 2016, Subaru hasn't figured out a way to fix this problem. My 05 had the same issue going into reverse - for me, just letting the clutch out and putting the clutch back in allowed it to slide right into reverse. Anyway, welcome to the Subaru world OP and enjoy the new WRX!
It's pretty much any manual transmission because reverse has no synchro. It would just add cost and complexity and take up space in the gearbox to add a synchro to reverse when its not a big deal. They also usually use straight cut teeth on reverse too which is cheaper to manufacture and is stronger for the same gear width, they are just loud. But who cares because it is just reverse.
Thanks guys. Reverse isn't a huge issue, it's just knowing how to work with its quirks. About the tires, the DWS's handled really well in that snow storm we had a few weeks ago. Probably one of the very few all seasons that I would feel better driving in the snow with. Summer tires that I have. I am probably gonna have to sell those as I do a lot of road trips through colorado during my spring/summer road trip and the DWS's will stay on for a while. Would love to keep them, but thinking maybe ill get a set of rims dedicated for summer drives minus the colorado trips.
Yeah if you have a set of summer tires definitely get dedicated wheels. mounting and unmounting tires degrades the bead seal and can mess up the tire if you do it enough. Plus its a pain in the dick and kinda expensive to pay to have them mounted over and over. after like a year or two of paying for mounting twice per year it would be cheaper to just buy cheap wheels.
Any recommends on inexpensive wheels? There's a set of 17x7.5 cosmos wheels in the vendor sale section for 600. Im not too familiar with those. I prefer 17x8 to match stock dimensions.
I like enkei wheels, they are good quality and not expensive. I feel like I got mine new for less than $600.
I'm so far loving the car. However, it did make a chattering metal noise during a cold shift into first. Not sure if it came from the transmission or the engine. It never made that noise again and it was a few days ago. Would it be something I shouldn't worry about? Thanks!
Talk to Samaritan Tire in Minnetonka. They have great prices on wheels and can get anything Enkei makes. Ask for Blake and tell him Brett sent you.
