I just bought my second Jeep off for exactly what I was willing to pay for it (okay $.10 more) I am now the proud owner of a 1975 DJ-5D that is damn near rust free. I have always wanted a DJ, and I figured it was about time! As I said it is my second Jeep, the first was an 86 XJ 2.8 v-6 which was HORRIBLE, but hey, I had a blast with it. Plans for the DJ include... 4.0 swap Dana 44's (if available, and where funding is at the time) 31's w/mild lift Rock bars CJ grill, and fender signal delete some form of winch Decent interior and a ton of fun!!! No it won't be an all out rock rig, nor do I intend for it to be. I needed something to haul parts around from junkyard to shop, pull a small trailer, and get me to the hunting, camping, fishing, and forest service roads out there. Well... on with the pics (directly from auction) I am sure you understand. [/quote]
do it...that was a dream of mine for so long...that is awesome I am so jealous! this was my old jeep: international scout 44's 36"crawlers 6"suspension lift 3"body lift fully custom roll cage cut-out fender flares 4.0high output with holley pro fuel injection w/ offenhouser intake mani twin stick transfer case detriot lockers led circle cut out trailer tails on and on and on.....
That's awesome! I've always wanted to see a built mail jeep. I have some 31x10.5s for sale, you interested? haha.
that thing is sick. props on the purchase. Will be a lot of fun to see that thing out on the trails! I'd say, set it up as a wheeler/camper. build it so you can utilize all that space in the back to build a sleeper or hammock rack kind of like a UNIMOG!
My goal is to create a decent 4x4 for mild trail and utility use, but keeping the basic look of the DJ. I was thinking white with dimensionally correct stripes from the 90's vintage postal paint scheme, as this is the era when I first fell in love with the DJ and said "boy it would be cool to own one of those and 4x it"; But rather than Red and Blue, two black stripes. Main color of white will remain, the bottom of the body will receive a coat of white Line-X bed liner sprayed on to protect against anything that mother nature can throw at it. While the body is bare metal, I will weld in a couple drain plugs into the floor pans, and have the pans and rear cargo area coated in the same Line-X, or maybe a mild gray. Rubber will be mounted to a set of the trusty, cheap, and always sexy American Racing AR-727; Lower rear corner of the door will be radiused to match the opening of the rear wheel well. The lower part of the door will be halved along the lower edge of the lower stripe/ even with the hood to fender gap (blue in the pic) into a modified "dutch door" Lower portion opening as a true door on internal hidden door hinges and latch, the upper portion will remain on the stock sliders. This will combat the typical issue with the DJ's and an inability to mount decent rear tires and widen the track caused by the side door's interference. Something similar to this guy's DJ, but a lot less "rigged" in construction; But the cut will blend better by following the edge of the black stripe (see below), and aesthetically matching the factory gap between the fender and hood. I would also like to incorporate a minivan-esque track system to have the doors close into a flush appearance. I figure if a two roller top, and a floating lower can hang a mini-van door, the same system can hang a much lighter half-a-DJ door. Rock bars in the form of either rocker plates, or rectangle tubing will be added to defend against angry mother earth and her stone army. Still working out the front axle issue, but the stock rear is a Dana 44 with posi. I have to regear the rear end from the stock 3.08 to something a bit less highway loving, and to match the front axle. Thankfully the front is already sprung for SOA (spring over axle) which helps on the trails. Either an ARB locker for the front, or something like the new OX locker, and a set of Warn locking hubs. Engine, transmission, and transfer case will be swiped from a '96 XJish. the '96 was still OBD-I yet still a Chrysler "High Output" 258ci I-6. Turns out that when Chrysler bought out AMC they got the rights to the decades old AMC 232/258ci I-6's. By adding block webbing, higher flowing head, and MPFI, Chrysler had the "new" 4.0L. This means the 4.0 is a bolt in swap to any Jeep that has a factory 232/258 using the stock mounts effectively doubling the HP and Torque ratings, plus giving the vehicle the reliability, adaptability, and efficiency of a modern engine. While the body is off getting paint and armor, I plan on striping the frame down, and have it powder coated in gloss black, along with the axle tubes. This will help keep the rust from killing my frame, and give it a bit more life. As stated before, the grill will be drilled and turn signals will be mounted inboard where the stock CJ has them. I would be afraid of pulling the fender mounts off on the trail. I am debating if I am going to put the spare tire inside the cab, or a swing away tire mout. I love the looks, usefulness, and multi use swing away racks (tire/fuel/hi-lift), but there is an issue with mounting CJ bumpers to the DJ... still researching that issue. There are some other things out there, but still trying to nail down ideas.
