Unless they can keep it around the 30k price range it will fail IMO. Without drastic chassis improvements over the forester the extra people capacity alone will not sell this vehicle due to the fact that there are many 4x4 suv out there that would haul the same amount of people + tow a hell of alot more then this thing would if it shares a chassis design with the forester.
It supposedly shares a chassis with the Toyota Highlander so it will probably do very well. I just wonder if they will just stuff the 3.6L engine in it. It will probably end up looking a lot more like a bigger outback though and nothing like this concept.
If they can keep the price down and put it on a chassis that can actually do some towing I'd be interested.
Yeah it should have like 5000+ lbs tow capacity but who knows. Hopefully it doesn't have the Subaru CVT in it...
One of the articles states a possibility of a 2.5l turbo and a 3.6l for engine choices. It also says that those will be paired with the CVT. But who knows what will actually be offered. I still want a Levorg. Lol
They should put it on the 4runner chassis with locking diffs and give it a twin turbo EG33 engine. I'd buy that for a dollar
Where did you hear it shares a chassis with the Highlander? The Ascent was almost a foot longer (Tahoe size) and I thought one of the reasons for developing Subaru's global platform was that it could be scaled all the way up to a sizable 3 row SUV.
Oh you are probably right, I probably read it in some comments on jalop so has no real weight. Sharing a Toyota platform sounded like something Subaru would do lately.
There are a lot of things I'd like to see Subaru do before offering a late entry to the saturated and declining SUV market. Why not a new STI hatch or coupe, a new version of the SVX or Brat, Legacy wagon, or even an STI-tuned BR-Z, Legacy, or Forester?
Because everyone knows that these days of cheap gas is going to go on forever and only SUV's and trucks sell well. Definitely not going to ever change so all manufacturers should not invest in small hatchbacks or fun cars.... Everyone obviously needs 7 seats and 10"+ of ground clearance to drive their 2 kids to daycare and commute to work!
The CVT has its place (the one in our Legacy isn't bad), but I wouldn't want it in anything that I plan on towing/hauling with.
This thing needs a low displacement, high reving H8. Possibly turbocharged. Yes, yes, that'll do nicely.
I was actually thinking the same thing, without the low displacement part. Why not a 5.0 H8? It's easy, just slap a couple EJ25 brocks together ya dingus. For your health.
With all the SUVs and CUVs currently available in the marketplace, Subaru is way too late to that party. And if they stick one of their typical underpowered, CVT powertrains in it, it will be a guaranteed failure-to-launch. I would think they would have bigger sales numbers if they would instead embrace the enthusiast market that they have virtually abandoned rather than try to chase the soccer-mom, Galleria-shopping crowd that have too many kids to fit in a two-row vehicle. Regarding the concept however...what is up with the turquoise colored accents?
lasers... distance finders, proximity sensors, parking sensors, loadometers to count how many loads you drop while fapping to porn on the 9" dash monitor while waiting to pick up your crotch fruit from soccer practice... wait, no, subaru is a solid 10 years behind re: technology. Probably just vanity accents to match the carbon fibro wheels and lip to draw in those former boy racers who haven't quite completely given up on life and are looking for something slightly less neutered than a prius.
I'm pretty sure there is going to be an STi tuned BRZ, just not available in the States due to some of the regulations regarding street performance or something of the sort. In short, regulations are limiting the introduction of a lot of great vehicles. Shocking.
Has to do with the agreement signed between toyota and subaru. If one comes out in the future it will likely use the motor out of the current gen sub forester. To do that will take couple more years of engineering and a price tag of another 20k. The price tag of the extra K then puts it in STI territory and subaru would not want that. So in short. Won't be happeneing.
Doubtful...the soccer-mom, Galleria-shopping crowds are the ones buying cars, and a lot of them are SUV's. Just take a look in your local Target parking lot. I'm sure that Subaru did extensive market research before designing this new 7 passenger SUV. I assume that Subaru is smarter than just throwing crap at a wall and seeing what sticks. This is most likely aimed to compete with the CX9, Highlander, Pathfinder, etc. They all tow in the 3,50o lbs range, and I'll be somewhat surprised is this Viziv thing can tow that much...but it won't matter. People that buy these won't be towing cars, if anything at all...maybe a boat or camper, but that's it. Also, look at the Nissan Pathfinder. They used to be a very capable offroad vehicle, and a few years ago, they changed it to a suburbia roaming, soccer-mom, soft, SUV. I haven't checked their sales numbers, but if I had to guess, they are probably up. It may seem to us that there are a ton of car enthusiasts...why don't they give us what we want! Well, the reality is that this is a small world that we live in...and the larger, non-enthusiast, soccer-mom crowds are the ones buying cars in much larger quantities. All of this said, I think the one car company that still caters to the enthusiasts and produces very capable vehicles...is Jeep. I'm also willing to bet that a very small percentage of their uber-offroad capable SUV's ever sees more than a gravel road or snowy highway...hence why Subaru's gas sipping people haulers are selling in droves: http://jalopnik.com/actually-subaru-is-making-america-great-again-1790092852?utm_source=taboola
The XT would have basically been a minivan if you would have put a lift on it instead of a drop!? Lol
A well articulated, reasonable argument. However, may I submit for your consideration: The Tribeca Checkers Mating, beeeyotch.
http://www.leftlanenews.com/subaru-reveals-brz-sti-sport-at-tokyo-auto-salon-93996.html already a BRZ STi but of course it's not coming here. Same engine, different exhaust, mostly cosmetic and handling upgrades.
From the comments on that car and driver link: "The engine in the Ascent will be the replacement for the STi engine. I have heard it's a 2.4L turbo. However, it's a completely new engine. It will Tow 5000lbs, Eyesight will be standard and it's body is actually bigger then a Chevy Yukon."
I think you forgot Toyota as well, the 4Runner and Tacoma are two very common and capable off-road rigs in stock form.
Doh! How could I forget lol. I actually have developed a want for a Tacoma, but I don't really need a truck right now. I know they are super popular, and I've been a Toyota fan...but the Tacoma's actually seem to get pretty bad reviews and have poor reliability. Seems surprising. Are they in a similar situation as Subaru? Really strong brand loyalty, and people still buy them even though they aren't truly that great? (ahem, as in the number of people that still buy STI's with the EJ257).
Where are you seeing reports of poor reliability in the Tacomas? That's a new one to me. Most of the reviews I read on them were pretty glowing, and the previous generation was in place for over a decade with just minor tweaks and updates.
