finally convinced the parents to get rid of their pos honda and get a subie 2010 ouback limited or premium (i dont remember) this thing is huge. lots of ground clearance. and has paddleshifters?!
omg that thing is huge next to the rs. They look so much different, I can't even comprehend that it's an outback
apparently it has more ground clearance than the new jeep cherokee. it seems that the outback is turning more SUV and less wagon.
yeah thats what i heard, its a pretty fun suv/wagon. i forget what its like to drive a brand new car when all we've had is used cars for years.
i highly recommend one if this is the class of car/suv you are looking for. very comfy, pretty peppy for something so big with a 4cyl in it (but it is a subaru 2.5 boxer ), lots of ground clearance and traction for MN winters, and has a very smooth and fun paddle shifting system integrated into the 5 speed automatic.
I'm almost positive that the only auto trans avail on the n/a 4cl is the CVT, but it does have the "make it feel like its shifting some kind of gears" paddle shifter dealies. Go out and hold it to the floor in D, I promise you wont ever hear or feel it shift, because its a CVT.
yeah my dad was talking about that whole CVT deal, and i didnt understand it at all, but that could be because 90% of the time he doesnt know what hes talking about because hes not a car guy but likes to pretend to be. and yeah i noticed how smooth it was, i like that alot.
he is getting the 3.6L H6. because we can tow our snowmoblies, the fishing boat, and my small trailer. it has the CVT which i want to try some shenanigans with one. cause i wound what it would fell/belike allways have peak power
Its like a snowmobile, you hold it to the floor, and it revs up to the peak powerband and stays there, it never really shifts "gears"
oh like a cetrifigul(sp?) clutch? i learned what i know about about engines on snowmobiles lol. and thats pretty cool, i always wondered how that would work on a car. also, that would be pretty awesome for shenanigans.
Yeah, the paddles are really just "suggestions" to the transmission. I like the CVT in my Nissan most of the time but it is weird. I've actually had the thing downshift to engine brake once (the cruise did it, because I kicked it in at a good 20+ mph over the target speed after a pass). The sound the car makes can be completely out of sync with what the car is doing (compared to traditional transmissions) which really throws me off if I'm pushing the car at all (but the Versa is not a fun car to push anyhow, it gets scary, just not meant for that).
1. my dad drives a versa, when i go WOT i laugh a little bit, it just sounds like its trying so damn hard and not getting anywhere. 2. the whole paddleshift thing is cool, but now knowing how everything works, i'd prefer not to have it.
Yeah, exactly. Funny thing though, with the complete lack of shifting, even though it never feels like it's going faster, you actually get up to speed pretty fast for a 120hp 2,700lb grocery hauler.
lol yeah i guess, i havent driven anything with less power than a subaru (besides snowmobiles) for a very very long time except for that versa, so i dont really have anything i can compare it too (except snowmobiles lol.)
The reason that the CVT has "gears" is because after 243598745093245923845 market studies, people who did not feel that transmission "shift" didn't like it. I will have to look for it, but it was the same car and a tech that flashed the ecu. The end users would drive without the fake shift and then give their findings. Then the tech re-flashed the ecu so it would shift. The end users drove the same car again, and everyone liked it. You have to figure that a shifting transmission is so engrained into everyones head, that dropping a non-geared transmission into a car will make people feel uncomfortable. Want the opposite, throw a 5-6 speed transmission into a snowmobile and see how it gets received by the masses. Everyone knows that you don't have to shift a snowmobile. Russ
that makes alot of sense, although i think it would be pretty cool for my car not to shift. thanks for that clarification Russ.
