Hi everyone i am thinking about adding some more bass to my car and i need some input before i start spending money on subs and amps. Right now i have 4 6.5" infinity reference speakers with a Pioneer deck. I am thinking about getting 2 10" subs to put in the trunk. I have been thinking of experimening with fiberglass to see what i can make with it, so i am thinking of making 2 separate enclosures. Both in the corners of the trunk between the back seat and the sides of the trunk. I have a 96' impreza and dont want to add lots of weight and take up all of my trunk space so i was thinking of getting some shallow subs and making small enclosures. So before i start to make the enclosures i want to get the subs so i can try to make it with the right volume. If anyone has any comments or suggestions on what subs, amp or anything else i should use, i greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Jake
yeah, we're going to be doing this go to wattsupcustoms.com and go over my fiberglass how-to (keep in mind those pictures are my work from about 4 years ago, so don't judge too harshly) i can get anything you want new too of course so far as equipment
Wwith a recommended enclosure of 0.3-0.7 cubic feet I imagine the driver doesn't move much air which prolly means not much sound. Also personally, Pioneer is the last company I look to for subs.
what brands should i look at for subs and amps? and will all shallow subs be quieter than "regular" subs
small enclosure volume does not equal low output (at all) however, you have nothing to gain by using shallow subs in your car... in any location you should fit one of those you have the needed depth. when it comes to picking equipment you need to look at the entire package- i can't properly recommend a sub without knowing everything else you plan on doing audio wise in the vehicle, and likely wat sort of performance mods you are also intersted in (importance of weight, if you want the spare tire in there, if you might want to run meth. or nitrous later etc. etc. etc.) Every brand has decent stuff when it's matched and installed properly. so... what else are you planning on running
I listen to mostly rock music so i want tight bass, no real need for big bass. I dont plan on adding anything else audio wise, so just keep my deck, and 6.5", and the subs with amp. I am planning on doing a full powertrain jdm sti swap, and possibly meth injection.
so powering the door speakers off factory amp? and sub off of something you are buying now? I'd recommend infinity/jbl (harmon kardon) for the sub as well. I'd go with- http://cgi.ebay.com/INFINITY-1052W-...oryZ3291QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem i used the jbl version (a pair) in my A6's 5.1 surround system and think they are incredible subs for the price. I've also sold tons to happy people. They will work well in a TINY enclosure too
my door speakers off the deck and the sub off a new amp. would you recommend getting another amp for the door speakers (4 channel)? and then a separate amp for the sub?
Elemental designs has well designed products, ripoffs from high end companies. Very cheap. Pioneer/Kenwood/Mtx/Kicker are stuff I avoid, the lower and mid ends are just namebrands. Hifonics and Profile make great amps for great prices. They also put out what they advertise(CRAZY huh!?!). Diamond woofers are great.
what? what ed product is a rip-off? they might have no quality standards and sub-par reliability, but they aren't rip-offs... as far as the rest of what you said, what is your experience in car audio?
so do you think i can get away with 1 of the Infinity 10" for now and add another later? and will I be able to notice the bass? that is all i want, to have some noticeable bass. what size amp should i go with that is not too much overkill and money?
I'd run one of those 10s off of 200-300 watts rms you'll definitely notice it I ran the sub channels of a 755.6 jbl amp on 2 of them in the audi and it was actually quite loud I have an mtx thunder 202 amp i'm looking to sell- it's used, works, and makes power in the right range. You'll be surprised how much output a little set-up like that can have. What is your plan for getting the signal to the amp? line out converter?
i dont know what gauge wire im going to use, i think 4 going to the amp from the battery and i have no clue what gauge im going to use between the amp and sub or the deck and amp. Will it be worth it to buy 2 of the infinitys so i have an extra one if i decide i want more bass? and should i buy an amp that can handle 2 so i can add to it?
if you want more bass than that it will make the most sense to actually just get a louder 10" woofer and upgrade that way (increase power handling/excursion of the woofer and get a larger amp). If you buy good used stuff now you'll be able to sell it for close to what you pay for it then... You won't need 4 gauge until you go over 800 watts rms- i'd run 8. you are using stock deck right?
no i have a newer pioneer deck. so i should buy 1 infinity and if i want more bass i can sell it and buy a better sub? How much do you want for the mtx amp?
If you make the enclosure perfect for th sub, it will give you alot of bass than a prefab. also TUNE the amp!
i just bought 1 infinity 10" reference sub and now need an amp and wiring. And of course the box, let the fiberglass molding begin.
I can provide the rest of what you need if you want- 8 gauge wiring kit and the 202 (it's in great condition) i'd sell together for $75 and back up that amp for a while (90 days) against breakage... You going to get in on the group buy, or go your own route with the enclosure? what voice coils did you get the sub in? that amp might not be the right choice depending on what you did there. -drew also, yes- if you are smart about what you buy/build you'll be able to get your money out pretty easily.
it is a dual voice coil sub here is the ebay link. i am going to try to make my own enclosure but if it doesnt work out i might get in on the group buy. What weight fiberglass mat should i use? 6 oz. per square yard?
i believe that is a dual 2 ohm sub- would work with this amp i've been referring to. I would use the heavier mat for this expresscomposites.com is the place to go
can you get it from me sunday mid-day? I'll be in the cities to work on my Merc for a while and get it ready for the dyno on monday. Monday coudl potentially work as well. Otherwise, it will be in Red Wing or Rochester with me. I do come up there most weekends at least once either way, but assuming you want this fairly quickly. -drew
Drew call it a Benz unless your talking about an old Mercury. But old Mercury's are pretty sweet if you are.
