Hi everyone, just wanted to say hello and I am happy to be joining the ranks of the few and the proud:) I just purchased a 05 Black WRX and absolutely love it. I test drove a WRX at Morries and ended up buying the car at Bloomington Subaru (long story but lets just say I will now tell anyone to avoid Morries Subaru in Minnetonka like rape)

On to my first question! One option that I want to add on is the Short Throw Shifter and MOMO knob. I checked with the salesman and he said parts and labor to install it would be around $407. That seemed high since the part itself can be had for $243 from www.subaruparts.com. He said it would be about $100 in labor.

My question is should I just buy this part then take it else where to have it installed? Anyone have any tips for shops to go to other then dealers that do good work? Does having this part installed by a non dealership place void any warranty or anything?

    Thanks!

    Congrats on the new car!

For the warranty stuff, I've read that anything that breaks has to be a direct result of an aftermarket part for it not to be warrantied. So if you install a short throw shifter and your window stops rolling down, those two are hardly related and you probably won't have any problems. But if you end up with transmission problems, I guess they can potentially try and hold you accountable. I think warranty issues pretty much vary from dealer to dealer. Some are mod friendly and others aren't.

You might want to look at the Kartboy short throw shifters. They're a very popular aftermarket shifter. They run about $100 and a little more if you want their stiffer bushings. Either way, it's much less expensive than what you're looking at otherwise.

i'm not too sure on the warranty issue, but firstly, welcome to the board. we're a happy bunch, except one guy that's kinda being a jerk-off by naming himself STI KILLER... but that doesn't matter. not everyone here drives a scooby, i for one, drive it's counterpart friend, the insanely egotistical EVO. as for paying 400+ for a short shifter with install, just buy a decent/good short shifter and i'm sure someone can point you in the right direction of getting it installed. that's a huge savings which you can pay for the kegger that all newbies must get for initiation! lol

anyhow, i'm sure you'll answers to find atleast 99% of all your questions on here... except for trying to find out who some of these members are... WHO THE HELL ARE YOU LVT???

look, you saved a bunch without even switching to geico! isn't that something?

Actually, that sounds about right for the shifter and install. The Short throw shifter retails for around 295 and the MOMO knob for about 85. They're probably giving you internal pricing, so it's discounted along with the labor. The nice thing about the Subaru short shifter is they can't hassle you warrantywise because it is a Subaru part. You get 20% off those parts prices at BP Subaru. Our dealership gives the MN Subaru guys a 20% discount on parts. I'm sure you could find one of the guys on here who'd be willing to help install that shifter. You can also add the Kartboy bushings to the Subaru short shifter for a very very sweet shifter. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me and if I can't answer it, I've got access to 6 Subaru techs who are more than willing to help. Enjoy your new car!

Installing a cobb or kartboy is easy, but it's the rear bushing that gets you. Especially on an RS with the heatshield, exhaust and the driveshaft in your way. As for warranty, if you have the bucks to spend have subaru do it with subaru parts, then they can't tell you its your fault if you have any problems in the future.

Great information, thanks everyone! I would definately need to have someone do it for me so I think I would be best off just taking it somewhere. I am just wondering though on labor if there is a shop that someone knows of that if I bring the parts they will throw it in the car for a good price.

No, I'm not kidding. I charge nothing to put in a short shifter. It is easy and riquires minor hand tools. If you really need to pay for the service, you can pay me in beer. I prefer Guiness in the can vice the bottle...because for some reason it tastes better from the can. Or I also like killians red, or if you can find it, which I doubt, a 6'er of Victoria Bitter. I had it when I was in Austrailia and I loved it, but I can never find it here.

Well that just sounds like a deal I would have to take you up on. I have Brian checking on pricing for me now so let me get back to ya!

Just curious but how long would it take? The car salesman told me about an hour or so.

A VB drinker... man I used to put those things away years back... every saturday night drank a case before leaving the garage to go chick hunting at the clubs... I can almost taste that sweet foaming Victoria Bitter...

You can get it playing football, You can get it riding a bull,
You can get it chasing a cow, You can get it driving a plow,

IN FACT I'VE GOT IT NOW... A THIRST, FOR A COLD DRY BITTER...

    VICTORIAN BITTER....

ha ha sorry reliving the commercials for the beer of my homeland...

Yes, I love Victoria Bitter. I dont' know why I do at this point since it has been since 2000 since I last had one. But I do remember it was extremely cheap to buy a lot of it, and it made me wish our domestic beers were as good. We pounded like 2 cases down in a hotel room. It rocked.

Readymix, I am getting some funds rounded up (selling some PC parts) and will be looking to purchase the short throw shifter here sometime this week if at all possible. I will give you a call, if that is OK, and see when you are available to help me out installing it.

    Thanks again!

Hey sorry about that, I was on my way to Winona with a car load of family members that wouldn't stop talking. I didn't get your number and figured it would be futile trying to talk to you in that car anyways. I'll give you a call later on today. I gotta leave for Cold Spring to pick my wife up right now.

Hey readymix, I didn't hear from ya yesterday but I might have missed your call since I was at the neighbors. Anyways if you are still able to help with the shifter install that would be great. If not just let me know and I'll see if I can do it myself or I'll just blow the $100 and have the dealer do it. I would just rather have an experienced persons help is all but I can always do the "trial by fire thing too" hehe.

I found some instructions online thanks to Brian so I can try to adapt those. In looking at them however my interior is somewhat different then what is in the pics.

Anyways, either way, let me know. Thanks!

Thanks, had my first race recently versus a 03 Mustang GT at a stop light. Pulled away from him quick, obviously God bless AWD, and pulled ahead through out till I shut her down at 90mph.

Love the car more and more every day:)

And for anybody wanting to buy a new Saabaru ($20459 plus tax), don't go to Countryside Saab. It was the nearest Saab dealer for me, and it was terrible. Any place would be better.

I bought mine from Morries in Minnetonka... An older lady Marlene I think was my salesperson.. she asked me why I was driving it so easy and to go beat on it.. so she took me and my wife to a parking lot with Snow and I hooked donuts and stuff... ha haha she just smiled....

    How was Morries?

I considered getting a Mazda 3 for the fiance from them here in Eau Claire but both 3s I drove had warped rotors. They were demo models that obviously had been beat on by customers before allowing the pads/rotors to seat.

The dealer seemed nice, though. Better than the Honda dealer- sleazebag!
