Hi guys, newb needs your thoughts and recommendations. My 03 Outback 2.5 auto with 80K has developed the typical symptoms of a head gasket leak, for now on one side only. The repair is over my head so I am looking for your recommendations to an affordable shop to perform the repair. Obviously the dealers seem to be the most expensive. Any thoughs on using the "magical" Steel Seal or similiar products? I know that probably isn't the long term fix. Go with the turbo gaskets? Any other work that should be performed while the engine is apart? Options?? Maybe save the $ and trade up to a newer model? Thanks in advance for the knowledge and humor from the members!!

I can't comment on the steel seal or any additives (sp?) but I guess it all depends on what you'd like to do. It's a ways off but at 100k your gonna have alot of maintenance (timing belt etc) which could/should be done if your doing the headgasket anyways.

Another thing to consider is trading it in won't yield much value usually. There's definitely some people here that could do the work for you alot cheaper than the dealership. Even if your gonna sell/trade the car it would be worth more with the headgasket fixed.

    Just my .02

Thanks for the .02! I welcome your and other members recommendations on a good, affordable shop to do the head gasket and other general maintenance. Probably don't need any major perf work at this point but when the right WRX comes around.....

I can do the job once spring rolls around, (april-ish) as my garage is full right now.

    $250 labor + parts.
