So for a few weeks I've had this intermittent squeak sound coming from what I assumed was my accessory drive. Every time I'd have the opportunity to check, though, the sound would go away so I could never trace it down. Today it actually happened at idle and the sound is actually coming from the passenger side behind the timing cover. Took the cover off and I see the belt has some markings (not deep) and the guide has rubber build up on it. I'm thinking that the guides might be too tight? As far as I know the timing belt has never been touched. Anyone seen this before? Guessing I need to replace the timing belt? 2011 WRX, 62,000 miles.
Looks like the guide is too close. I would replace with a new belt (to be safe) and adjust guide clearance. I like your avatar. Mcintosh
The guide (either on the crank or one of the cam guides) is clipping the belt. Get a new belt and use a shim when doing the guide clearances so they don't rub, ran in to that issue when I first did my timing belt on my Forester. I didn't think to do the guide clearances and when I went to check if I set the timing right I noticed it was dragging on the crank guide.
