So there is a guy that says he is willing to trade cars with me, its a 1996 Impreza coupe (not completely sure which one) with a new clutch, 5 Speed, 180,000 Miles on it, Added 5 Inch Tip Muffler, Almost straight Piped, a Custom Short Ram Air Intake System, but the speedo doesnt work and it needs a headliner and the interior pillar cover things and I have a Dodge Avenger 2.5 V6 auto with 160xxx miles, a new transmission, new front end, new struts, ram air intake, black 17 in rims, 6000k HID headlights, and LED brake lights my question is do you guys think its worth it? i really like that style and would really like to have a subaru but i figured i would ask you here about it thanks a ton -Kevin
Yes, I would run away from your dodge faster then any human could blink. My 96 impreza has well over 200K miles and has been boosted for about 50K now, no issues.
haha, i was thinking that, but how difficult is it to fix the speedo? would i just be able to swap the cluster? or is it something more difficult than that?
does anyone know how much time and money it would be to fix if for some reason it was the speedo cable?
I like the idea of getting rid of the dodge for a subaru. Is the value and condition of the cars about the same?
I have speedo cables. lol i have every freaking small part from older subarus. I also have cluster that I could sell if its necessary.
Cars are sold because there's problems with them. Avenger or Impreza, when you step to another car, expect work, expect work you don't know about. People sell their cars for a reason...because they don't want to deal with whatever is wrong with them, i.e. too much $$$ or too much trouble. Some things have been done on the car. Some of the problems of the car are known to you. Subarus in general are nice platforms to work on though, so if funds allow, problems turn into opportunities. The late 90's Impreza body style is one of the coolest made. The engine of that time was smaller though, so a 2.5L swap may be desirable or more typically a swap to a 2.0L or 2.5L turbo motor and supporting hardware from a WRX part out. Pretty much all suspension from 93-07 Impreza/WRX + specifically 04 STI fit that car. You can swap in a limited slip rear diff as those older models don't have one. The tranny is basically the same from 93-07 and any 2.0L-2.5L NA or turbo bolts right up. You are starting from one of the lightest Impreza chassises, but there's a bit of flex in them requiring more bracing then the newer iterations of the car. Basically funds and time permited, you have a pretty open plate for modification. Ask how low the timing belt was done on the car? It should be done about every 100k miles, so at 180k, it might be due for another one. Ask about fluids too: coolant, brake, tranny, diff, engine. Ask about other parts like spark plugs, fuel filter, and such. Know where you're sitting on the change intervals on all this stuff. If you don't, you might as well run through the entire car once you get it and put in all new fluid everywhere.
so I took into consideration what everyone here is telling me and I am hoping to have my car sold soon so that I can get a subie, and as far as any parts go I would defiantly hit you up Colin, you live very close to where i'm at right now (I am friends with Brian and we were in your neighborhood earlier and he pointed it out) so i think i will see what him and i can work out, and if nothing else i do know someone selling a 97 impreza outback sport, 5 sp, 216k miles that i was going to call
