Now you do a compression check. If that fails, you pull the block, remove the heads and see what got destroyed, probably a valve. Then you get a new set of head gaskets and head cover gaskets and assorted supporting gasketry, along with the valves you need to replace and reassemble.
You're not really giving us any information to go off of other than the fact you have a 2002 WRX. Also, we're not going to be able to give you any definitive numbers. You're going to have to start calling around to shops (I would highly recommend you talk to Matt and Ron at RS Motors) and tell them your situation and have them look at the car. You've got two choices here. Fix it, and pay anywhere from 2-4k depending on who you take it to and how much has to be done to fix the engine. Your second choice is to sell the car, and for that you're going to have to contact a dealership/car sales lot and see how much they'll give you for it.
I dont really know what to do at this point....i also live in the middle of no where....so i guess i should have someone look at it then thanks.
Yep, if you want to keep it, have it looked at by a professional. If you would rather find something new, put it up for sale on here or craigslist. I did everything that i could to save mine after the flood tried to destroy it. And i had just dropped an additional $7,000 into a new motor just before the flood happened. Talk about back against the wall. But i wanted to keep it...so blood, sweat, and beers ensued. It will be cheaper to fix than to buy another car if that helps you with your decision. Good Luck!!
I bougth mine and dealt with ringland failure and now tranny issues. It is all up to what is wrong with it. Hopefully nothing went wrong except the belt. Get it checked out.
For the car? Do you own it, or do you have a loan on it? I owned my car when the motor went out and it was much cheaper to rebuild the motr, put a new motor in than to buy another car for $10-15k. But i love this car and will keep it forever, so letting the blown motor break my spirits was not an option. The value of the car is still high enough that a bank will loan you money against it, then use said monies to rebuild it or get a new motor. If you decide to go that route and get the 2.5L, get aftermarket pistons for gods sake...i should've taken that advise.
Yeah, motor is dead. Typically rebuildable thoug. Most likely you lost most or all your valves. Possible a cam gear or 4. If you were really unlucky, the valves may have come in contact with the pistons. So anywhere from 2k to fix or replace the heads, to 5 or 6k to replace the entire engine. If you sell it as is with a blown motor you can maybe get 2-3k out of it depending on condition and parts on the car.
You can have yours rebuilt. I bought a brand new 2.5 liter from the dealership, it rang up at just under $3,5oo with everything. But then i would suggest aftermarket pistons, which from my understanding is around $5-800. Then you need to figure in labor. I paid right around $7,500 for everything IIRC. But as stated, that was still cheaper than getting another car which i would have more than likely dropped 15-20k on.
It was about $800 in just head work when the timing belt came off of my motor due to a front end collision. Only 4 exhaust and 4 intake valves were bent, I was lucky.
The alternative would be to have your current block fixed/rebuilt; new valves, pistons, and other miscellaneous parts + labor...may be more like $5k going that route.
Just curious, how many miles did you have on it when the belt went? If you are over 100k did you have it replaced at the recommended interval?
It was not the timing belt... i took the covers off and the belt looks like it was in good condition....timing was off but I'm thinking could this be the belt tensioner?
Yeah...it's probably the usual damage then. Burnt exhaust valves, bent valves... You can definitely save it if you're willing to keep it and drop some money back into it. You'll never "really" know how much it'll cost ya until the block is taken apart. I'd say no more than $6k, no less than $3k. I wish you luck brotha! There are many places that could get you taken care of, just depends on how far out in BFE you live.
Yea thanks guys....My WRX is pretty much in the middle of nowhere down by Marshall we towed it to my farm and now its just siting on the front lawn
Well i would suggest calling RS Motors (info is in the vendors thread), get a quote for rebuilding your 2.0L, get your finances together (loan or cash for RS), then rent a trailer if you don't have one and trailer it to RS. Unless it all sounds too much like a hassle to you, but for me, my car was/is mah baby and it was worth all of the work and money. Like i said, it was cheaper than finding another WRX! Don't believe the love that i have for this car? After the motor build and all of the money that i put into it, this happened>> http://mnsubaru.com/threads/r-i-p-blu-of-tangledupinblu.36236/page-2 My brand new engine only had 10,000 miles on it when it went under water. We brought it back AGAIN after this mess. Keep your head up, you can fix it!!
Man I was just about to give up.....but thanks to my buddy I'm saved ...looks like i'll be swapping motors soon...
You can do it and it will be sooo worth it when it's all said and done! The headaches are just temporary.
Best of luck in your journey man whichever way you choose to go. I'm dreading the day something happens to my beauty!!!
Congrats Pheng! So are you currently breaking in the new motor? What route did you go, 2.0L, 2.1L, 2.5L?
