Long lunch on a slow Friday post...

First of all, I really want to build an offroad machine for my third vehicle...lol I have been considering everything from rangers, to wranglers, to unimogs (which are freaking awesome but might be overboard for what I need)..

I was looking on this site:
    http://alliedarmament.homestead.com/SubParts.html
And saw they offer a lift for imprezzas. It looks like it just drops the subframes giving more ground clearance and doesn't increase suspension travel or anything. They even lower the shock/strut mounts. Also, it looks like a mnsubaru member has pictures on this site.

I have a bunch of questions.
-Does anyone have a picture of built up offroad subarus (specifically imprezzas)
-Is alliedarmament or backyardboys the only offroad subaru vendors?
-Out of all the 90's on up subarus, what has the strongest suspension?
    -Are the outbacks built stronger?
-Are most subframes and suspension geometries the same including foresters and stuff?
-Has anyone played around with increasing suspension travel? Longer Shocks etc.
-Are numerically higher gears available if you did big tires?
-It looks like alot of people lift the old subarus and they had low range transfer cases and stuff. How do those do offroad when compared to say a stock ford ranger?

A fun build I think would be to start with a 90's 5sp awd imprezza wagon and do the 4" lift, get some universal bushwacker flares and cut the fenders out, buy some super swamper tractor looking tires as big as will fit in the cut fenders, and then regear it for the larger wheels. A truck would probablly be a better start but i bet you could do alright on trails, seat 4 people and be totally unique.

    Back to work...

Do you have a front shot of your front bumper / light bar setup? From the side shot it looks really good, I'd like to see more of it.

    well....first....you need to join/hang out on Ultimatesubaru.net

second, AA (allied armament) lifts are for legacies (I know it says impreza there....but there's been some debate as to wether it will work)

third, why post-'90?? IMHO, without a tranny swap, they're significantly inferior to an EA82: true 4WD, and lo range are 'da bomb!!!' not to mention the significant price difference.

as far as I know, there are only 3 lifted imprezas in the US (correct me if I'm wrong, austin), and they're all done with forrester suspension, no body lifts, and I've not heard of anyone buying an AA lift for a legacy either. And there are only a handful of lifted legacies out there, and they're done the same way.

IIRC, BYB (back yard boys) doesn't make an EJ lift

and the scorpion lift is in AUS only (I think the springs might be available here...but not the body lift)

and a couple pics of my '88 (details in sig)

these people know alot more about the lifting then i do, but lets see if my input can add anything.

first off chux is right in that the EA82 w/ dual range is way better then an EJ w/ AWD. however using the EJ engine (ie ej22) along with a adapter plate and a dual range trany will yield very nice results. since the ej22 has approx. 50 more hp and maybe more ft-lbs, then the ea82.

for the suspension would it be possible to run forester struts, with scoprion lift springs? this should give the impreza 1-2" from the struts then maybe another 1-2" from teh springs.

    just some ideas.

yea, but a cheaper way to do this would be buying an EA82 and dropping in an EJ22.....especially since other modifications need to be made to put an EA tranny in an EJ car (tranny xmember, probably custom driveline...)

yes. borderline too much stress on the CV's, also I think Scorpion springs are either expensive, or hard to find.....or both

oh, and I forgot to mention, I WANT TO HELP!!! hehe, the final choice is up to you, I'm just trying to point out the issues you might have when you've got your rig built. honestly, my ideal rig is an '88 dual range wagon, with an EJ22 (oh wait, by next summer.....I'll have one  )
