Would it be safe to say this is one of the few times you couldn't stop saying "$h1t" I'll admit I did but I stuttered a few times each time I watched it.
The closest experience I've had was back East when we use to live in the projects, as kids we'd see who could roll down the 100 ft hill the quickest, sometimes we even dared each other to do cart wheels. And that's where I learned my first four letter words.
Why are people clapping, and then you hear someone say, "whoa, that's way worse that last year!" Go help! Anyway, that would scare the crap out of anyone, but I suppose you have that risk in mine when you enter the event.
Did he survive? I know I'd find out if I searched but I'm at work and I'm not even supposed to be online.
It's easy to forget just how dangerous the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb can be. Those who take to the mountain do so with the knowledge that any wrong turn could send them, their car and their co-driver down a rocky embankment at speed. Jeremy Foley recently found that out first hand at around Mile 16 when his Mitsubishi Evolution 8 stepped off course. The car proceeded to somersault end over end down the side of the mountain, sheering off body panels and spitting parts along the way. From the look of things in the video below, the machine rolled at least seven times before coming to a stop right side up. Both Foley and his co-driver were air-lifted to a local hospital, but have since been released. Early reports suggest Foley escaped the calamity with a broken leg. This was his first time at Pikes Peak. If ever there were an advertisement for building a proper cage, this is it. Check out the video of the crash below. *Update: According to a post on Evolutionm.net, neither Foley nor his co-driver, Yuri, broke any bones in the dust up. Foley exited the crashed vehicle under his own power and Yuri injured his shoulder in what may be a dislocation. http://www.autoblog.com/2012/08/13/watch-jeremy-foley-crash-his-evo-8-at-pikes-peak/
That was the first thing I noticed on the video, too. I already saw pictures of the wreck, but not a video. People are cheering in the background as soon at the car goes over the point-of-no-return. It's pretty nauseating to think of people taking enjoyment out of a very potentially fatal event.
That would make a nice video for the guy's resume. If you hire me, you can walk away from this!!! With respect to the comments about helping, what are they going to do? The sanctioning body should have trained personel on scene, especially at that section of the race, to handle those situations. There are times to help and times to not, this would be one time to let the professionals handle it.
He is lucky he was in devils playground, a couple of corners before that or after that area and he drops for thousands of feet. The is one of the few places above the tree line that there is actually some kinda of "ground" under you if you go off the road. Russ
