My turbo has oil residue on it (guessing it has been leaking over a period of time) my question is, if i clean the oil residue off the turbo, will there be any difference?? the residue is on the outside of the turbo. The only problem that i think would happen is that when the turbo gets hott, it will have a hard time cooling :? because the oil residue is covering it... correct me if i'm wrong but i don't as much as i thought i did. How hard is it to clean it??? thanks a lot in advance..... p.s I can buy dinner at my parents resturant (thai) if anyone is willing to help.
My 02 WRX is sitting in the shop right now with that exact problem. It is getting a whole new turbo installed under warranty. Derek
You can clean the oil off, but it probably won't make a huge difference. I would just because it's oil and when it gets hot it smells. Use a engine degreaser, and water, preferably when the turbo is NOT HOT. Don't use really high pressure water either. Before you do though, is your car under warranty and not modded highly?
well, the main question is, where is the oil coming from? You could have some major/minor issues depending where the oil is leaking from. Russ
abd there also could be the probmlem of whaen you clean it.... it could start leaking even more, but thats a worst case senario...
would i just spray the enine degreaser and wait a couple of minutes then wash it off with water?? or how should i do it? any steps i should take?? what kind of engine degreaser would you recommend? My warranty is out of date already i think because it's passed the 60,000 mi mark. we never had to use our warranty so i feel i was jacked for my warranty.... i didn't use it at all for anything, my car only has an uppipe, downpipe, cai, catback exhaust.... someone told me that it could be one of the washers or something... something isnt tighten... maybe when i got my uppipe or downpipe install something wasn't tighten because when i got my car back from propulshun none of my screws for my intercooler was tighten at all... i was leaking boost and my check engine light was on..... so i had to bring it back and they retighten everything but i don't know....... what do u mean??? how??
Oil on the outside of the turbo probably means that the banjo bolt connection of the oil hardline to the turbo isn't sealing. Did the shop remove the turbo to install your uppipe? If they did, my guess is that they either lost or forgot to install one of the brass washers for that banjo bolt. If you want to double check this connection, there should be a brass washer on both the top and the bottom of the oil hardline where it meets the turbo.
some times were it s leaking gets pluged up by dirt..... and when you wash it that dirt/oil gets washed away making the leak even worse...... but it dosent sound like its whats happening to you....
