We've all seen the fallout of 90% of the political threads on this site. It almost always ends in tears or bannings and I think there is a good solution: A separate politics forum. Slice off a section from OT and make it 'Political Discussion Only'. Then, when a normal thread goes off-topic into the political realm move it in there and let the fur fly. One thing: In order to be a truly democratic entity this section should remain unmoderated except for porn, and racist remarks. Everyone who enters that section should have to click a button that acknowledges that they understand that they're going to get butthurt and called names and that they understand that nothing said in that forum (except for porn and racism) can be used to get someone banned. Call it: The Squared Circle of MNSubaru. That way I can surf the site without inadvertently stumbling into an e-peen measuring contest.
I'm not sure I like the un-moderated idea. the theory sounds great, but I have a feeling that people will get butthurt, and turn it into a problem elsewhere on the site..... we discussed doing something like that, except keeping it more strictly moderated than the rest of the site (mostly to keep the discussions on-topic). but nothing became of it.
Yeah, glad you brought it up, we've been talking about this recently, the political threads that is. However, we've focused most of discussions on how to moderate the threads. At this time we're status quo with current site rules. We're still in the process and don't have a final objective. Your feedback and input is welcomed and appreciated!

just make a politics thread and sticky it. if anyone posts anything about politics elsewhere points.... or ban.... I am personally sick of hearing politicly suggestive banter all the time on this site. bush this, oil that, this is a forum for SUBARU ENTHUSEISTS not for politics......
It's election time. It's going to get worse before it gets better... Honestly, I like Etchy's idea of unmoderated with a warning to all who enter @ getting butthurt.
Why don't you just take your stupid politics (or politikz) over to t3hw00t.com. The Politics forum there is unmoderated anyway. That way you can keep the stupid crap off this site.

really, our "news and politics forum" consists of .. news threads. Started mostly by me, because I'm fascinated by how stupid the rest of the world can be sometimes. But honestly, take it there. We don't have admin-activation for new accounts anymore. It's self-activated. You can post right away. The site has actually been dead lately, because we're all bored with each other. Come on over! And yes, we do need to figure out how to curb the ludicrously OT threads that begin over here. Maybe everyone needs to go outside and drive their cars more?? :biggrin:

If you guys are too afraid of an OT political forum, what the hell is going on? All afraid of how to moderate it? Seriously, it was just spelled out. Racial and pornographic are the no no, and that's it. How difficult is it? This is THE most sterile automotive forum I've ever seen, as far as debatable topics go. I'm on other forums that are waaaaaaay less moderated and take much better control of themselves. Blowing off an idea without even trying it is lame, really lame. Like that ****ty manager that thinks they know everything lame. It could be great, it could be a flop. There is only one way to tell, and that's with a little experimentation.
I have absolutely no problem with letting people go off however they want to - you know that. It's when attacks get personal that a problem arises. If everyone could have a healthy debate without the personal attacks, MNsubaru would be a much better place. And I know, politics heats everyone up... and personal attacks are easy .. but the way I view posting is this: if i don't feel like I could say these things to someone to their faces, why would I post it on the internet? If i make someone mad, how can I face them at Firestone every friday and carry on like nothing has ever happened? I agree with you piddster. 100%. My view is "if you have nothing useful to say, don't post in the thread". But personal attacks are always going to be moderated.

political thread(s) Are there not other sites, forums, blogs etc to have these discussions? I enjoy talking politics, but on a subaru site? I come here to talk and learn about cars. I don't see the upside to having it on here personally. My .02 anyway...
Then again, removing the off-topic would probably increase the amount of BS or worthless posts in the actual tech/subaru related forums. So... :shrug:
I think that could happen. But I believe the "gray" would be removed and topics would become black or white and thus much easier to moderate. Its about subarus or its not posted. I know....
Well this site would become quite dull, and I think a lot of people would not be on here as much. This would mean not having the quick replies to some of the questions asked in the mod/tech and other subaru related sub forums. edit: If you don't like the OT area, stay out? (Not meaning to sound like a jerk, and not pointing fingers)
I don't like or dislike the OT area, I'm really indifferent to it. I hear you though and you make a good point with keeping the knowledgeable folks interested/contributing quickly on the site. If thats part of what keeps folks here, I would agree with just leave it alone, but my opinion on the politics remains the same. Good discusson

This forum isnt a democracy :biggrin: I like the idea of a seperate politics sub-forum. That way people know that when you go in there you know what to expect. If you can't handle the heat then don't go in that sub-forum. Or the mods could just make a sub-forum hyperlink to a political forum out there that already exists Afterall that would be a more fitting atmosphere and redirect a lot of the tension and drama elsewhere.
Morgan, I like you. We've discussed having a separate politics forum, and also sending the whole OT forum away. Obviously these things don't happen overnight.
