I had surgery today, and I'm just curious who else has had this surgery. (apparently its common).

I fell 15 feet off of a hesco barrier we were building. They are similar to a box built out of chainlink and they interconnect like legos in order to build survivability positions for troops. I was up on top directing the heavy equipment and got knocked off balance. I had a flak jacket with sappi plates in, so when I fell, my entire spine and back for the most part was protected. I landed on my tailbone, and jacked it up.

I went in to have it looked at, I was in some serious pain, (anyone whos damaged their tailbone knows how bad it sucks). Anyways, they xray it, and see that I chipped it, and the fragment is growing closer to a nerve. They then do a physical on me, and notice that I have a pilomidal (spelling) cyst above it, which is news to me, but a VERY**common thing, an estimated 45% of people have or develop them?

So today they cut the bone fragment and that cyst out. They did it with local, so I didnt go under, and they gave my motrin for pain currently. I listened to them doing the entire procedure, at times offering input, and letting them know when and where they needed to give me another shot of lydocaine (local anasthetic). I have several buddies who have had this surgery and they said they all received better pain meds, and also, that it was taken more seriously. Mine was removed by a lieutenant commander (an 0-4 which is equiv to a Major), and my platoon corpsman (an e-2) at my battalions medical facility, the acronym is BAS. Usually a BAS only does diagnosis, gives vaccines, takes blood, and triages injuries before refurring to the naval hospital.

Anyways, I'm just wondering who has had this, and what their treatment and recovery time was like. I'm one hurting unit right now, and I never complain about pain. I have to go in every day for the next few weeks to have it repacked. AWESOME.

PS, that bone chip they removed was huge. like, the size of three pennies stacked on eachother.

my fiance had that done a couple years ago - pulling out the gauze and repacking is not pleasant at all.

cant be worse than going under the knife while you're fully conscious.

Oh, and a mis-sized needle for the local.

But really, I cant wait until tomorrow around 830am to have it repacked when I'm REALLY sore. it's gonna be a great time

yikes, glad that you werent more seriously hurt in the fall.

I know someone who broke their tail bone in a similar fashion, although not as dramatic, and was back to normal in a few weeks.
