Cliff notes: ANY motorcycle or atv (regardless of age) that is designed for kids 12 or under has been banned as of two days ago (2/10/09). Dealerships have pulled all of their models off of their showroom floors and parts are no longer available. The US Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), responding to the threats caused by lead found in children's toys (mostly from China) has implemented broad sweeping product requirements that will make it illegal to sell motorcycles & ATVs targeted to those age 12 and under. Manufacturers, dealers and parents that ride all understand that kids just don't chew, lick or ingest parts of and/or their motorcycles and ATVs and small displacement motorcycles and ATVs are not just for kids (E.g the Pit Bike Industry, new riders, wives, etc...) While anything is possible, not all things are likely. So, these requirements defy common sense, will not have a measurable impact on child safety, but will unduly harm the powersports industry during turbulent economic times and will deny our kids and future enthusiasts from participating in a positive and healthy sport and family oriented activity. Sign and send to all you know. We need to show that many others feel the same way about this as we do. Your kids and future riders are depending upon your action today! http://www.amadirectlink.com/legisltn/rapidresponse.asp In the meantime send in you opposition opinion to this before we loose all of our youth racers to the ignorance of bureacracy.. Does this really have anything to do with off-road vehicles being banned for anyone under 12? I'm not reading it that way. It's a banning of any product, intended for use by those under age 12, with a composition of 600 parts per million of lead, of any of its parts. I don't think there's any motor vehicle battery that passes that test. I'm not saying I endorse this as it's entirely too broad of a ruling, just trying to clarify. I'm pretty sure these manufacturers do not use a lead-based paint in this day and age, it has to do with the parts composition on the vehicle.
It's for everything for kids -- dirtbikes and atvs just happened to get nailed by this. The majority of the lead is found in the alloys that make up the engine components.
OK, it just read like an email fw:FW:FWD:FW:OMG: especially the bit about someone having an agenda to wipe out off-road vehicles, when that is not the case. Just new sales will be affected.
No, this affects all mini bikes. You cannot sell your KLX110 privately, either. There is also a parts freeze so good luck trying to get any parts if anything breaks. This is not from a chain email that I got, either.
Oh yeah, this also means that kid's motocross racing is pretty much done for as well. There is no way the AMA will allow the multitude of classes for kids 12 and under to happen this summer. What is ironic is that some kids will ultimately end up on full sized bikes and break their necks on them, lolz.
What?! Wait! So the use of pit bikes is no longer because a bunch of pencil pushers think the youth of America is eating the paint of the ignition covers?
Yup. Dream is going to have fun trying to get parts for his two 110s this summer. Those bikes are affected by this. :eek4:
Thats really too bad! I watched my dad's best friends two little girls learn how to ride a dirtbike before a pedal bike the oldest is going to be crushed when she finds out that she can't get a bigger bike after she grows out of her SX 50. This is going to kill the youth of this nations want to dirtbike, thus severly effecting AMA Motocross in the long run.
yeah, intresting thought. This won't improve saftey for kids under 12. Hey, wait... would this also mean that kids should not ride in automobiles that have simular or greater lead percentages?:eek3: if that is the case this will easily be overturned.
Here is a letter from Greg Robinson of Unadilla (major motocross track that hosts a slew of national level events):
http://www.amadirectlink.com/legisltn/rapidresponse.asp http://www.tomself.com/ Why not just do it now?
Yeah, I found a better article to quote from and edited my 1st post. After reading it a 2nd time, it did sound a bit phoney.
well I signed all the petitions on the links you posted.. I know this year I was/am hoping to build a nice Dirt bike track in my backyard.. got about 3-4 Acres to play with.. and we were going to buy some kids bikes.. will still seeing as it is form my brother in-law.. all I got to say about our Government is... NANNY STATE
YES. I say let the dumb ones kill themselves off, just don't breed with any of my friends or family before you do.

KTM hasn't done anything to their site yet. http://ktm.com/Sportminicycles.20.20.html :fiddy:
I dont want to think or take responsibility for any of my thoughts or actions or lack therof, I love the Nanny State......
I say, if you are over the age of 4 and eating the paint or plastics off of a gas powered motorcycle seems like a good idea, then survival of the fittest is alive and well and should be allowed to continue taking the lives of the dumb ass kids that eat lead-based paints and plastics, or drink the used oil out of a combustion engine.

Where the **** are the parents!!! A small motorcycle is not the thing you let your kid go out and play with alone ... were is the common sense in this situation? So is mom and dad's bike ok to have in the garage for the younger kids to be around? So whats the scenario here ... young rider wipes out, decides screw it I'm gonna gnaw on my fender and not pick my bike up ... really I think we have better things (as Dan pointed out) for our government to worry about, than the young of this nation getting outside and enjoy a simple power sport.
exactly.. sure is... damn weaners nowadays.. I learnt too ride when I was 7-8 yrs old on an Ossa 250cc, my first bike 3 mths later was a Suzuki 400cc dual sport.. needless to say I broke my leg on that one about a yr later... but htats cause I was a crazy SOB... my first road bike was my TL1000R v-twin.. never put it down.. just rode it within my abilities... again I say NANNY STATE..... so much for Hope you can believe in...
What is funny is that a child can get their snowmobile safety certificate, watercraft operators permit by mail, or ATV equivalent at age twelve, and ride an adult machine. Apparently they won't drink used engine oil or chew on crankshaft/connecting rod bearings.
From what I understand, both Honda and Yamaha have pulled all of their mini parts from their national computer databases.
Even when its prehistoric? Luckily its pretty much brand new still. Its probably worth a couple of bucks .
