thats really angering that the police department there would do that. all that tax money went to waste. the really lame thing is that they wouldnt have done that at a classic car gathering. its more often than not, when its a bunch of imports and other newer cars. cops always kick people out from unidale but not really ever from porkys?

if i were asked about the parts on my car id just say that its for when i take it to a track. fast cars turned fast arent always street racers.

Just the normal crap they do in PRC (people's republic of California) They have been doing these "crack downs" for years. I was there when they sprung out the beautiful new smog testing trailer that the city of Freemont paid some ungodly amount of tax money for.

And people wonder why I am leaving that state.

My birth state although my stay there was short. Sport compact cars, lowered, with tint and loud exhaust driven by tweentys seems to draw the police in like flies to a picnic. Of course you might draw some attention yourself when you annouce events like "The Official One Lap of the Twin Cities." Especially after the events in Maryland a week or so ago. I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

That's pretty shameful. Instead of trying to make a favorable connection with those hobbyists, they instead developed a street racer "profile" and are creating a hostile relationship.

The difference between targeting the young guys with import cars and the others with classic cars, is money. The young guys probably have less money to raise a stink and fight it publicly, so they're easy targets. Street racing stinks but those guys were just hanging out, not causing trouble. Ridiculous.

It's pretty easy to get out of that kind of BS really. Legally, if they can't prove you even drove the thing into the lot they can't do anything to you. And even if street racers do assemble there, you can't ticket people by association. People use 494 for doing highway racing, does that mean you should ticket everyone driving on 494 for street racing? Let's get real.

"...more than one hundred police officers..."

This was a organzied raid, they were just doing their job even if they agree with what was going on or not.

so where were the cops on the highway getting the real street racers? The majority of the cops were in the parking lot. Even the article kept saying that they had no evidence of street racing. The majority of the tickets can be easily dropped.

Catless exhaust is illegal here too (Its a federal crime BTW)
Oh and local PDs are starting to crack down on cat-less. On a ride along, MPD pulled over a 1974 car, officer smelled cat-less exhaust (because, well it was) and double checked that the car was made before 75.
I really wouldn't recommend a cat-less in MN, they know what it smells like and that is probable cause. Your car will be taken, and you may go to jail.
Seriously, be warned. I don't know if cops have suddenly become environmentalists, or they see it as a way to crack down on street racers, but it could get bad.
Thankfully for me, AVO now makes a CARB approved stage 2 kit for the LGT, so I'm good to go :)

Oh and the only way this raid will be justified is if the owner of the lot had already told them to get off, in which case its pure trespassing and I fully support it. However, no one was charged with trespassing or loitering, huuuuuuuuuuuuuuum.

probable cause isnt off a hunch though. they cannot search your car without some form of evidance that will hold up in court if needed. but they will bend the rules sometimes and say they saw something. people really should know their rights more to be able to hold their own in these types of messed up situations. im glad i have a cat on my exhaust. if a situation like this happens to me ill deny a search and when they cannot find anything to site me for after illegaly searching my car ill bring them to court whoop whoop

Many people don't know this though.
Actually, I believe in MN cops may soon have to inform people they can say no to a search though, thats pretty sweet. (Pending court case)

They aren't always the most forward about searching your car either. When in Missouri I was asked if "I could look around a bit" and he went on to search my entire car. He found some paraphernalia that I forgot about a year before. Good thing he was cool about it. Missouri is a much more conservative state on that kind of thing.

Well, because you can say no, they have to sort of trick you in.
I would always say no. At the least, you never know what fell out of some guy out of the dealers pocket under the seat. Stranger things have happened.

I ****ing hate cops who bend the rules. They make prosecutor's lives harder. So what, you found a body in the trunk. Now I can't ****ing use it because you botched the search, *******.
The most common rule bending they get away with. They'll take a long ass time to write your ticket so you're not technically "waiting" for the dog. Without PC, they can't really detain you for the dog, they have to have some reason like writing a ticket. But then, if a defense attorney can prove they seriously extended writing the ticket waiting for the dog, it can get tossed (recent case out of Illinois)

Honestly though, what cop is going to actually go through the trouble of having your car towed and hauling you off to jail over being Catless? Seems much easier to just write a ticket and call it a day.

The same type of cop who writes tickets for license plate frames
Also, running catless is not some state petty misdemeanor, its a federal crime.
Finally, you tow the car to preserve evidence.

I have yet to hear of someone being federally prosecuted for running catless. I dont think the fine catless folks of mnsubaru have much to worry about. You could probably win the lottery before you get your car taken away and goto prison for running catless.

I think the police can use the dark tint as a way in: the car doesn't have to be moving (moving violation), the motor doesn't have to be running (loud exhaust), the key doesn't have to be anywhere near the car (light not working) for them to have an excuse to start bugging you.

One thing you all have to remember... we are talking about PRC. They can do anything they want in a communist state. Trust me, I was in the 'tuner' scene for a number of years. The way that the current laws are written, if you have any modifications visible from the exterior of your car, that gives PC for a vehicle search. This search is to locate any items that are in violation of the CARB laws (California Air Recourses Board). And yes, that means if your car is lowered, exhaust, tint, what ever. I know this is BS, and you may think "they can't do that" but I am here to tell you they can, and will do it. If you have your emissions system/engine modified in any way that is not carrying a CARB EO number, your vehicle is subject to impounding, and required visits to the smog ref, and you can't slip anything by them. If you are even in the area of a street race in Ca you can be fined up to $500 and thrown in jail for the night. There is a spectator law that came into effect in '99 that allows them to do this. And yes... if you were walking out of in-n-out burger on a caturday night and two idiots in civics go tearing past in a race, you CAN get a ticket.

There are many reasons for my move to Mn and not Ca. One of them is the state law makers, and how they act on whims.

Glad someone is here to back alot of this up. I was telling some people that they used to take a polaroid of your engine bay, then send you to the testing station. You had till you appointment to get the car back to 100% stock. And at the testing station, they would compare your engine bay to the picture, and to a picture of a stock engine bay. Anything out of place was a fine.

Prison? No, you're not going to federal prision on this.
I was just warning that there are no cops who knwo this is illegal, what it smells like, and they look for it. Might you never see them? Probably.
But if you do, they will make your life difficult.
Oh and any cop who's going to do this will seize your car. They "can" do this for a lot of stuff. There's the infamous case of a kid who got tossed in jail (and towed) because he had a loud exhaust and talked back to a (jackass) cop. In this case, it would likely be justified (the towing, not the jail) because they need to preserve evidence adn show that its a removed cat and not just a dead cat.

^^^Yes, that does sound Communist, and Fascist as well, although Fascist has become a kind of 'catch all' word now a days. Times are changing right under our noses.

Yes, I do understand that Police officers DO indeed have a hard time everyday on the job, BUT at the end of the day, we all do the same thing, go to bed, and are civilians of a government of some sort. I think that the mentality behind this kind of thing is a 'mob mentality, also peer pressure, cuz $h1T rolls down hill, if you do not follow suit.

    yet another blanke statement....

A kid I know is a local cop.. I didnt realize I had hit the school zone and was doing 35 in a 20zone as he passed, he whipped around then realized it was me... told my wife about it later...

Now I wouldn't come here and bitch and moan cause he did.. He would have been doing his job... I break the law I pay... simple.. you punks wanna break the law and not have consequences... and we all wonder why the world is getting out of hand, ie Jasons egging thread...

ps.. I have no cats on my wrx... so yes I am technically breaking said laws too.. but I donnt have a juvenile attitude towards the cops.. this coming form a guy who as a teenager got held down with a knee in his back and 2 pistols on him... one pressed against my temple... BY COPS...

This is important. If you treat cops like they're humans, and they're a nice cop, they'll overlook quite a bit.
Have 10% tint, but you rolled down all your windows, turned on your light, kept you hands on the wheel? They may just overlook that if they're ina good mood. Put them in a bad mood and you'll be getting every ticket they can think of.
There are also some ******* cops. With them you're just ****ed. Still doesn't do any good to treat them like they treat you.
