Whats up everyone? I have an 05 STI. I am looking at upgrading my car. I know for sure that I am going to get the Cobb AP and TBE. I read on their site that that should add about 50hp. I have been reading around on different sites (Nasioc and IWSTI) for different turbo upgrades and what people have done. So if I do upgrade the turbo these are the parts I am looking at getting. FP Green Turbo Some 800 cc Injectors (Any suggestions on brands?)Helix? Walbro Fuel Pump Perrin BIG MAF That is what I think that I need. I also have a perrin turbo inlet tube on my car now. I'm not sure if I need a bigger intercooler?? But my biggest question's are what kind of numbers could I expect out of this set up? What else might i need? What problems with my car might come around later after it has been installed? If everything is done correctly do you think there would be any problems?? Thanks for all the advice and help. -Matt
That sounds like its in the 400whp range plus or minus a few hp's. The guru's will have to fill in the specifics. I would suggest if possible attending some of the ProTune events coming up in a few weeks to get some idea and talk with some of the others who have already gone down this path. Happy Hunting!
GOALS FOR THE CAR? Based on what you wrote above: -Superzilla instead of the green -Perrin modified injectors -FMIC (APS or Perrin) This will require a protune.. Your car will not idle or run without one. Problems to expect: Longevity of motor is questionable. More lag than normal. Speeding tickets. Numbers: depends on the dyno. On a mustang with an aggressive tune on race gas maybe low 400s. It would all depend on the size of the turbo really. OR: -Perrin gt30r kit -Perrin FMIC -Walbro pump -Perrin injectors -Good protune I think that would make a very fun car as well.
Also, I'd look around at other options than the Cobb TBE. It's nice pipes, don't get me wrong, but you can accomplish the same thing for alot less money. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/02-WRX-STI-Invidia-Version-2-Downpipe-Bellmouth-V2_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33630QQitemZ8059383463QQrdZ1
Adding to what Jason said.. if you want the perrin gt30r kit.. you might as well just buy that. It comes with it's own DP.
Agreed. Forgot about that completely. Perrin 30R kit comes with UP/DP/Turbo/Intake/Wastegate. All you'll need is a catback exhaust to finish it off.
Wow!!! Thanks for all the advice. Ok so I looked up the perrin GT30R kit that you guys were talking about. It is about $2,500 which isn't all that bad. I would still need the injectors and fuel pump?? One other thing that I noticed is that it is a rotated setup. Am i going to need to do any modification to my car to get that to fit?? Also if i do need a bigger IC would i be able to do a TMIC with that turbo package?? One more Question, who would be able to tune all of this? My legacy that i had before the STI I blew up (possibly a bad tune from a friend) Thanks again for all the comments and advice!!! -Matt
the green would be about the most you would want to run on a tmic. you could run a alchy kit with a tmic, but the stop and go driveability will frustrate the heck out of you. if you went with perrin's gt30r kit you would need: injectors, modified stockers or something like the UR injectors, either way you might want to get them cleaned ballanced and flowtested at rc engineering. boost, egt, oil pressure gauges.. maybe a knock light if you do a protune. fuel pump. engine management, acessport or utec. i'd suggest the acessport. untill turbos comes up with a firmware update to the sti utec it's pretty frustrating with our temperature fluxuations up here. fmic and compatable BOV. (book up a day with bikerboy to get your fmic fit correctly.) you might consider headers. a cel fix. (two antifoulers so far for me has worked the best. there is a nice write up on nasioc about it) you might consider coating and wrapping your headers/uppipe/ewgpipe and downpipe. a catch can would be nice too. i would think about doing matt's super ninja special. you really only address 1/2 of the issue with a standard perrin catch can install. boost control. isomeone else might correct me, but i dont think the 05's have thr restrictor pil. you could do a gm boost solinoid install, or get nuts with the turbo xs dtec boost thing... i guess it's the witches tits for gear dependant total boost mapping... and it comes with a knock lite. /cheers!
Nice post Aaron! All the advice in this thread is really good. Everything depends on where you wanna take the car though. Do you want 500whp? autox? drag race? daily drive?...etc. After you answer those questions its going to be a lot easier for us to make some recommendations as far as turbo size is concerned. Also, the perrin gt30/35 kits require the fmic... and YES you must upgrade your intercooler with any of the turbos suggested in this thread. Tuning is very crucial.. with a big maf the car wont really drive without any. Russ, WRX1 on the board, can tune an accessport with his protuner or he can tune a UTEC as well. The tunes IMO are very good for the price in comparison to some of the dyno days.
Ok It would be a daily driver for sure. but i am also looking to go the track(drag) every once in a while. I would really like to have a comfortable daily driver and i was thinking around 400whp. But i'm not one to get hung up oon numbers. If it somewere close that would would be cool. Biggest thing though is that it drives ok everyday and i am trying to do it right so i can stay away from as many problems as possible.!! Thanks again
GT30R kit = 2450 Catback = ~400 fuel pump = 100 injectors =~150 FMIC = 1100 protune = 200-400 I would guess after everything and some unexpected costs you are looking right around 5k.
So with that GT30R kit being a rotated one. Is there anything special that I would have to do to get that thing to fit under my hood?? Also how hard would it be to mount up a FMIC? just looking at my car now (stock) it doesn't look easy. Will i also loose anything semi important under the hood. like a relocated battery, or loosing washerfluid resivour. Thanks again
You wont lose anything. The Perrin kit is designed to hook up to the Perrin FMIC. The battery can stay in the engine bay. FMIC's are pretty easy to mount if you have some experience with tools and knives.
