I've got a couple buddies doing some powdercoating, and are willing to cut a deal, if you go through me 8) anyway, here's the deal: $50/rim or $175 for a set of 4, $200 for a set of 5, and we can do anything up to 16", colors are currently off-white, soda fountain red, semigloss black (10%), midnight black chrome (95%), black onyx (~70%) but can order just about anything and they can do other stuff, anything that would fit in a typical household oven (yes, they're doing it themselves in an oven in the garage, but they've done a ton of stuff, and do great work), typically $50 per oven-full...but I'll give you an individual quote for stuff..... here's a pic of one of the sets of wheels they did, and these are going on his truck, so he trusts his own work! Mount/dismount varies, sometimes one of the guys has access to an older machine that is a little rough to be used with alloys, but works fine with steelies...otherwise they have to take them somewhere, typically, you're better off getting them done yourself  but we can talk
I can only think of ONE advantage that paint has over powdercoating: Paint is cheaper. (Well actually, there are probably more color variants available as paint; I don't think they make "chameleon" powdercoat). But anyways, I can assure you that durability and longevity are NOT in the list of paint's advantages. Think about it this way: powdercoating is electromagnetically bonded to the metal, and then baked hot enough to liquify the powder. The end result is literally a plastic coating. Powdercoating is so difficult to remove that the usual method is to overbake it so that the plastic melts and drips off.
it's some friends I went to high school with, so the western suburbs of the cities. I don't think they actually bead blast, but they clean 'em up real nice...it'll still look sweet. illicet, I'll ask him about the intake manifold and they did screw up one of the first sets of wheels they did, and thought they could just grind it off and start over....it didn't work so well...This is a virtually indestructable finish!
i have seen those wheels pictured above on the guys truck. when he first did them he dropped a coffee can full of nails/screws on to the rims to see hodl the soating held up, and the nial/screws didnt put a scratch in the finish.
Is there any plan to do larger rims that 16"? I just got a set of 19" rims and I want to have them powder coated. Is there anyone who can do it? Do you have any pictures to compare all the colors? Derek
The company I work for had some parts come back from a powder coater the wrong color and we had one of the shop guys try to take it off, several grinding pads later... Powder coat is tough stuff.
yep....when [if] they get a bigger oven! sorry, he's been a little hard to get ahold of, he's already gone home for the holiday, but I'll be in town as of tomorrow night, so I'll get ya'll the answer's to your questions...
I won't duplicate it here, but there's a thread on rs25.com forums about powdercoating wheels, with some firsthand accounts, prices, and a poorly-shot picture of my attempts to damage the powdercoating with various WMDs (hammer, knife, saw, etc). http://www.rs25.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31988 http://www.rs25.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36664
OK, I keep meaning to dig up this thread and update it, but I keep forgetting... Well, due to some personal/family issues, they no longer have access to the oven...so powdercoating is on hold for the time being.... I'll keep ya'll posted and thus-far, even 16" wheels are a tight fit, so it's a definate NO to anything larger than that. Let's see...oh, they definately do NOT bead blast, but he assured me, that it'll look SWEET!! if you really want a sweet finish, you can smooth it out with some real fine sandpaper, and clearcoat them.
Intake Manifold, $50 (had it done after a P&P job and knife edging the throttle body ) Rims, $90 (had to paint the centercaps myself. This is grey): The prices included sandblasting, but my tires were dismunted beforehand. The rims were scratched before, and now they look flawless I don't think you will ever find prices cheaper than this anywhere. I get mine done at Superior Powdercoating in Baraga; they have the facilities to powdercoat CRANES (up to something ridiculous like 55ft?) and they just stick anything extra in there for a minimal price.
$90 for all 4 wheels. All I had to do was drop them off and pick them up 3 days later (intake manifold was a next day job). Mapquest Baraga. Its in the UP.
I called them up in the UP and they will take stuff in if you ship it. Unfortunately a set of wheels with no tires would run about $40-50 one way via a fedex account. Still approaching a better deal than locally. They have like 5-6 standard colors too. flat black, black, white, off white, dark gray (like the picture above), red, and yellow. If you could just get a truck full of wheels and car parts to have powdercoated and then fill the rest of the space on the truck with recyclable cans and bottles and then drive it up to MI for the cheap powdercoating and $.10 per bottle exchange.... =)
