Now that it is a year after I wanted to have this project on the road (or rather off road) it is time to show some progress. Lets start off with Day 1, trailering the Brat home. The topper is perhaps the ugliest thing I have ever seen... This pretty much sums up the all of the progress I made during the winter months. Early spring activity! Brat is moving to a good place to be worked on. Chux doing some actual work while I take some pics. Brat looks 10x better without the topper. Amazing how much stuff can fit in the back of it. (5x wheels/tire, extra motor, 2 exhaust systems, bunch of brake stuff, extra windshield, rear window, and much much more) Working on replacing the gas tank. Part 2 The old gas tank. probably not visible in the picture is the crank which runs the entire length of it. good thing there was a new gas tank in the bed of the Brat when I got it. (happens to be the last OEM subaru gas tank for a brat /possibly EA81) I dont know what this thing is but it was in my way so it is gone now. Brat works amazingly well at storing tires. IIRC there are 12 wheels/tires and an engine in there. I love how the Nokians for the Impreza are way wider than the Brat tires... Short shifter? Yeah right. Changing out some bushings to try and help the weak sauce shifter play. New shocks for the rear. I think these are for a 2.5" lifted TJ Jeep. they will bolt right up and when this are compressed all the way they are the same length as the stockers at normal ride height. Got some goodies from 83projectbrat. Prepare for domination. EA81 Power. 1.8l of gear driven, push rod fury. Bye bye tailgate. NorthUrsalia is the proud owner of this beauty. Oh and FYI the topper was given away to a good home. Got the exhaust fabbed up. Now to start in on the rust in the bed. Video of the exhaust: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4228646805196052491&hl=en Spare motor What could this 2"x2" 3/16 tube be used for?
Hmm.... And some 1 7/8" schedule 80 pipe? A statue of some sort perhaps? Ah some frame reinforcement. Brat definitely needs that. These pieces of tube are 22" long... I wouldnt want to rear end this After some welding Pretty beefy stuff It moves under its own power for the first time in.... along time. Of course it ran out of gas right there. Had to push it back in w/ the Impreza. Way cooler w/o topper. My two subies More to come later P.S. it weak you can only post 20 pics in one post.
2.0 wrx swap.... this will remind you of what to do... http://www.dpccars.com/car-movies/10-19-06page-Fast-Subaru-Brumby.htm
looking good martin. is it going to be coming on the Duluth cruise?? a brat at one of our events would be a first for the club.
Thanks all. Nathan: I have other motor plans for the brat. Turbo is however not in its immediate future, and probably wont ever be. I am planning on doing a EJ22E which will pretty much double the available power. If that isnt enough maybe a S/C on top of it. I highly doubt it will make it to duluth this year. It would be fun but i dont know if i trust it that much yet. It still needs more work (having some reverse issues right now) and the tires are iffy at best. I have 4 different tires and only 1 of them consistently holds air. As for the first brat at an event I know someone brought a Brat to firestone before. Now I just need to do some piddly stuff (replace light bulb, put on license plate lights), and figure out why it wont go into reverse and then there is a small chance it might make it to firestone. Also I need to start planning out my front bumper.
It was originally a turbo car, however IIRC that engine died and the previous owner put in a NA motor. He left the turbo decals on, from what I have heard it is very difficult to get those decals now a days.
pretty sure it wasn't ever turbo. unless they swapped the crossmember, gauges, and ALL wiring aswell.
from kurt's FS thread on USMB: "No, it is not a turbo, someone just put the wrong horizontal stripe on it!"
Update: Brat now moves backward under its own power. This is a large improvement over it only moving forward under its own power.
T-tops too! Wtf has happened to Subarus design team over the years? I want some t-tops in the wrx.
Another 100,000 miles and I'll be tied with the brat on mileage. But, I still won't have t-tops.:emo:
^ the t-tops are pretty sweet. They will make for some fun times in the mud. in 100,000 miles you should add t-tops to your wrx.
Heres a pic of the linkage: that bolt should be a tight fit, and well it isnt. so there was alot of slop in there which made it so it wouldnt move over far enough to hit reverse.
lol. the oil pressure sending unit isnt connected. the wire is broken, and i need to fix it like i fixed the gas gauge. it also needs an oil change. It had used oil when i got it oh about a year ago.... it kinda does need an alignment. but hey it moves in a kind of straight fashion.
where did you get the Brat? I haven't seen or heard of any in a grip. Have you seen any turned into dune racers? they rock!
hey martin, I found some pictures on my digital of your machine and of your shop. I'm gonna add them in a couple of minutes.
nice pics! Thanks for posting them up. My car looks oddly shiny in this pics, considering how dirty it was. man that was a long time ago, thats when we figured out wrx rear discs are the same as the LX rear discs. not too much has changed on the brat in the last 3 or 4 months. I had to move it to an undisclosed location to make room at the mini storage. I am hoping to start doing some work on it soon though.
