Suddenly shut down on me while watching netflix. Red blinking light that allows you to turn it on, but shuts back down 5 seconds later. I took it apart and blew the dust out. Issue remains.
I bought this nearly new in 3/08. I think it had a good life. What to replace it with? It's primary use is movies/netflix and the occasional game. Thanks

They have issues with the CPU separating from the motherboard and need to be reballed/reflowed to fix it. All because Sony used inferior solder during assembly. The CPU gets hot enough to soften the solder and eventually the CPU separates from the board. In the past, I've tried to reflow one using a standard heat gun with no success. There's a lot of info out there on the subject, but you really need the right tools to fix it correctly - an actual reflow station.

If you game at all, I'd look for a used Ps3 on the cheap. Otherwise, devices like Boxee Box, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, etc have apps like Netflix built in, if you are mainly concerned with movie watching. Most blu ray players now days are "internet-ready" and support Netflix as well. Or just spring for a Ps4...but your Ps3 games wont work on it

It's an easy fix, basically you gotta redo the thermal paste, I've done it 3 times on my ps3. Gave up after it did it again, not worth the hassle anymore. Youtube it, really simple instructions.

I think mine is on its way out and i bought mine in 07-08 too. I think it might be time to upgrade this winter to the 4.

In all honesty like others have said if you dont game its not worth spending the money on another one. plenty of players that do blu ray and dvd have applications on them now too that can be done on the cheap otherwise id recommend looking into some of the other things mentioned above.

Mine just crapped out to. I think it may be the disc drive. Everything else seems to work but the system wont recognize or load any disc put in to the system. Does anyone on here know of a fix or advice on a place to get it done?

Take note of the orientation of the label on the disc as you insert it...if after 15 seconds or so it doesn't read it, eject the disc and see if the label is in the exact same spot. If so, the motor is probably shot. If it does spin, it may just be a dirty laser. Drive replacement is fairly straightforward if you are at all familiar with replacing any PC equipment (you need a tiny screwdriver though!). Should be able to find a good working drive on eBay for < $50.
