I told the kids I would get them one. I know I want the 60 gig. There are quite a few for sale on ebay that come with a variety of accessories. Someone educate me on what I should be looking for as far as accessories. Thank You

Rick...just go into any target, best buy, etc...and just get one (60 gig) as for accessories...extra wireless controller and charger would be good ;) As for games...Call of Duty 4 for sure

Now get back to recruiting and ordering subaru parts

The 60GB has a higher compatibility with older PS2 titles, due to its emulation design, or lack thereof.

There is a download online for backward compatibility. I don't know what it covers, but even if you buy a 40G, you can always add in a different hard disk at any time. Any size you want. Sony even provides the instructions on how to do it.

Here is the specs as per Sony USA. Per the site, the 40, 60, and 80g all have Wi-Fi. I don't know about the card reader though. I don't remember what I have. It's either the 60 or the 80g. I know it came with Motorstorm.

Both the 60 and 20 have this. It's a hardware decoder instead of software emulation. It was removed with the following models and replaced with software emulation, and that has now been removed with the new 80's IIRC.

40 gig does not have a card reader.

I didn't see the point in hunting down the overly priced 60 gig as I still have a ps2 that works fine, and even so, I never play ps2 games anymore.

Most places, including Target and Wal Mart have starter kits that have chargers, different cases, protective screens, etc. Pretty cool for kids.

Don't worry about backward comtability, it will soon be a thing of the past anyway. We don't even test games for compatability, and sony doesn't even require PS2 games to work on PS3 any more. Slowly but surely they are removing compatibility from their hardware.

    FYI:

You can always upgrade your HDD if you want, they are standard serial ATA (SATA) hdd's.

Buy a 40 gig, upgrade to a 160gig, you can find them cheap at microcenter ;)

Go for the largest HD you can afford, once they open PS HOME and you can start downloading more stuff, the additonal space will come in handy.

    *THREAD JACK*

When buying a PS3... Would you buy new? Or buy refurb/used?

Also is it a MUST to buy a 60 (or rare 80) or will a cheaper 40g be just fine?

I would buy new, and get the extended warrenty to go along with it. Just get the 40g and be done with it.

The more HD space you can afford, the better. But 40Gb should be fine. Yes buy the warranty, PS3s are not as rock solid as people think. We go through them like crazy, just as much as 360s. Make sure you buy it at Best buy with the extended warranty. The gamestop/eb games warranty covers you for one replacement only, and then you have to buy the warranty again on the new one. If the replacement machine breaks and you didn't buy the warranty on it you're SOL.

The MGS4 pack is really nice. It's what I would buy if I was looking to get a PS3.

Save up for an HD tv. You will lose at ton of quality with the SDTV, text looks really crap. Atleast sony requires text to be legible on all resolutions, MS doesn't and that creates alot of problems on SDTVs.

Agree'd. The MG bundle is a bargain at only $100 more than the standard 40g unit. The MG unit got he 80gig HD, MG game and strategy guide.
I probably would have bought if it was out when I bought mine, I just have a 80gig hd external hooked up to my PS for backup

Which one you get really comes down to features. If you want SACD support, get a 20 or 60. If you want the best backwards compatibility, also get the 20 or 60.

Did they take away SACD support with the newer models?

IIRC the HDD is able to be swapped out so the HDD size shouldn't be your only consideration.
