So today I filled up at Shell by 169... they had an attendent at the pump.

He asked me if I wanted my gas pumped??? Needless to say, it was an awkward and uncomfortable experience.

    Has anyone else seen this?

I've had it done a once or twice when I lived in Hastings. It is weird though, I prefer to pump my own gas.

Isn't it in NJ where they don't allow you to pump your own gas? I know one of the states does it. And yes, it is awkward. I don't think I'd allow someone to touch my car.

The BP's I frequent usually have a "full service" pump. I've never seen anyone waiting to pump the gas, however.

Hrm, would you tip those guys?

Is that the one on Old Shakopee Rd, just East of 169 ? If so, I go there a lot, and whenever they ask I just smile and wave them off with a "No, I'm good, thanks." They're never pushy. I don't feel awkward about it, and they don't seem to, either.

I can't remember where now, but a few years ago I stopped at a place that had different prices on the pumps. The higher priced ones were for full service, and the lower priced ones were for self service. I don't know if they do that any more, but if the extra labour is already added to the price of the petrol, I'd be disinclined to tip.

My one nod to OCD is that I read signs. One of the ones posted at petrol stations states that persons with disabilities are entitled to have an attendant pump their petrol for the self service price. That makes me think that some places do still differentiate on price.

I was in NJ last year, and only the attendants can pump the gas. Very awkward for me, but didn't seem like it for anyone else.

yeah, the guys at the shell station at old shokoppe and 169ish said that it was free full service day but i said no as did a couple other people but one person was saying sure when I was about to leave. Ive had them do that before but i dont think I would ever agree to. I accidently pulled into a bp full service and when the guy came out to pump I declined and he told me about the price difference and i promptly went to another pump.

I'm from NJ and can vouch for that. Many cities and states have laws that prevent people from pumping their own gas to preveny topping off, as it spreads a rediculous amount of fumes.

oregon was like that when I was there, it was a little freaky to get out and go to fill up and some guy would be lurking at the back of my car.

    Lots being NJ and Oregon?

Was topping off and subsequent fumage really a concern in 1949 when NJ's law was passed? Even in 1951 when Oregon passed theirs I doubt emissions were a concern.

Glad this is "Off Topic" ;)

Damn...a lot on young 'uns here. It's called Full Service, do a search noobs! :p

...and there are several other countries that require it to be filled by an attendent. I had to show my wife how to work a pump a couple of weeks ago as she has never had to pump her own gas....

I learned about Oregons law when I lived out in WA. My dad had loaned me his Corvette to take down to Portland to visit my Uncle. I stopped for gas in Beaverton, got out and started to pump my own gas. Somewhere in the middle of this a guy comes over and just starts staring at me with a weird look on his face. After about 30 seconds of this, I look over at him with the "WTF?" look on my face and asked what he needed. He told me about the law, and I couldn't believe it. Then I started looking around and seeing all of the other drivers still sitting in their cars with fuel pumping. Talk about a strange experience.

A girlfriend of mine is from Oregon, I flew her out here and she couldn't believe we pump our own. She had no idea how to work the pump
