Here is my dilema. My XT has one of those retractable trunk covers that pops into place. I think it is the same as those available on the WRX wagons etc. This thing rattles like no tomorrow. It also buzzes when I turn the stereo up. There is a modest yet totally servicable sub in the back.

Unfortunately, for work, I have a laptop and I find myself needing to keep it concealed in the trunk so I really don't want to ditch the trunk cover if possible.

Any of you have any thoughts on how to quiet this silly thing down? I am pretty sure the rattling is coming from the actual spring loaded spindle like those on a set of blinds that one would have on a window.

    Thoughts?

find out where its rubbing and wrap either electrical tape (if you have black interior) or clear tape of some sort if you have tan, should work

Most of my rattles (and there are LOTS, ugh) have been solved with some combination of foam and/or silicone sealant.

my wife's cross county does the same thing.
there actually was a kit that volvo sent out for this.
it was 2 pads of self adheisive cork gasket material.
    anyway, it worked..
    just find where its rubing.

Is this peice the cargo cover? Mine doesn't rattle. As mentioned, foam can be used to tighten the ends up. Go to Menards/Home Depot and buy their strips of foam designed for air conditioning systems. It's only $2-3. Cut an inch off and wedge it in the loose spots of the cargo cover. Then save the rest for what I did below. :)

(I've purchased a strip of this for my old GC and wedged it in between my radiator and the frame to act as a radiator cover which prevents air from going over my radiator.)

I don't know for sure if it is the ends that clip into the plastic panels in teh back of the car or if it is the actual spindle around which the cargo cover winds when open.

    Ugh...

Put a few peices where you think it is rattling, if sound contiues use in more locations/differnt locations untill sound is gone. I had a rattle in an old wagon that I had. Took forever to find the sound.
    Good luck.

Passanger in the back helps they can point it out.

Just turn the stereo up louder!

Seriously some latex tubing or self sticking foam will do wonders.

Actually that is part of the problem> Because the sub is in the back of the FXT both it AND road bumps are rattling this thing a lot.

Thanks for the tips guys. I will hit it with some foam here and there and see if I can isolate it.

Other than that, this XT has been a dream. Just ask the guy in the 330XI that got a good look at my rear license plate the other day.

3m Strip Calk, solves all problems. Can even use it to seal subwoofer enclosures. Just can be messy if you dont use it properly.
