I'm trying to attain a few handguns from my grandfather, but I have a few questions first.

    1. I am under 21. As I understand it, I do not have to have a permit to possess a gun in my house nor do I need one to transport it to and from a range, correct?

    2. What is the best, or legal way to ship a gun? Can I have them simply shipped to my house?

    3. Any other hurdles or walls I may encounter while trying to accomplish this?

    TIA

Well your first problem is that you can buy any ammo for your pistols. Second you are actually not old enough to actually own the pistol. I think it would be easier to have your parents get it for you.

I know that one must be 18 to possess a handgun, what's the difference between that and owning it?

to transport a gun from/to the range/home, the gun has to be unloaded, cased, locked in the trunk of your car. you don't need to have a permit in this situation.

i have no idea why you only need to be 18 to buy a handgun and 21 to buy ammo though.

Okay so we've established that I can have them.

What's the best way to have them shipped? Do I need to have them shipped to an arms dealer or is to my house suitable?

Go visit your grandfather, bring them back (unloaded and cased) across whatever state lines you have to cross & don't sign any papers on them. Blah, Blah, blah, ain't saying anything, blah blah blah. ATF doesn't need to visit me or mine, we keep all our guns legit. Blah, Blah, Blah. I am free for lunch any day of the week and we can talk, but I ain't saying crap about what you should do on the (very government monitored) internet.

    i belive you must be 21 to posses/puchase a handgun. 18 for a rifle/shotgun.

as for transporting. unloaded, cased, in a real trunk. no pass through.

for shipping you should go through a FFL or whatever the acronym is. someone that is licsened to ship/reviece weapons via mail.

    ^+1

if you want to do this, you can't legaly have it untill you are 21.
9 times out of 10, (if you are responsable)
"i'ts my grandfather's gun." will get you out of trouble.
you need to have it unloaded in a case and in your trunk.
bonus points if you have it locked.
getting ammo is going to be a chore.
    what are you getting?
    i shoot .38/.357

Well, I found this, and according to it, you only have to be 18+ to possess a hand gun.

I've seen the same thing on multiple publishings too.

http://www.ustreas.gov/press/releases/reports/report.pdf Talks a little about the law that cover this, and where I found the info above, I'd call a gun shop bills guns or something and ask them, I'm sure they can ramble off an answer.

When transporting, make sure that not only is it unloaded but your ammo if any is separate from the weapon. Keep it in a separate compartment if you have any. You can even keep it in the passenger compartment.

If by chance you get pulled over, when the officer asks if you have contraband, a gun is contraband. Explain that you have the weapon unloaded in a case in the trunk with out ammo and you'll be fine. I have a permit to carry and have been pulled over 3 times for tint while carrying and all 3 times the officers told me it was a good call to tell them up front about carrying my weapon on me. All the officers were very nice too.

Is there some legislation that says persons under 21 can't by pistol ammo? Or is it just that well known that everyone knows it except me?

When shipping them, sounds like I'll need to find a gunshop that is licensed to ship them from there and then another here to recieve them here?

Did some more research and it looks like UPS will ship handguns on priority mail. Anyone have experience with this?
