ok this has been bugging me for a while. when ever i buy a dvd its in wide screen format so that i can watch it on a wide screen tv. now how come some DVDs will fill the entire screen to the edges, and other will show the letter box on top and bottom?

this bugs me cause i always change the aspect so i dont get burn in from the letter box. i think the tv is 16:9 ratio, but i am not sure.

on some dvds u have the option to change to and from full screen, some come FS standard and they label the WS option just to sell more. if u go into the menu or options of the dvd u should be able to change it

Couple fo questions so I can help you the best.
What kind of TV do you have?
    Where are the black bars?

FYI: You may be buying widescreen but not all of them are 16:9 aspect ratio, some maybe like 2.35:1, which would be shorter both ways. If the TV looks close to a square it is 4:3 if it is closer to a rectangle then it is 16:9 Depending on what TV you have you should be able to change the aspect ratio/ format so that it does fill the TV.

If you had a letter box image you would have a black border around the whole image.

If you have black bars on the left and right you have a 4:3 aspect ratio

if you have black bars on the top and bottom you have a wide screen ratio that is less then 16:9 ie: 2.35:1

i stopped in at ultimate and talked w/ Erik.

the answer is the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. most major films use this (something to do w/ filming) but it will not properly fit the 16:9 aspect ratio.

so the small black abrs on the top and bottom of the screen are kinda supposed to be there.

    Ding-Ding, we have a winner!

Dynapar, buy a real TV = no burn-in.
I have a DLP and it is the bomb, yo! Almost 2 years without a bulb replacement, too...

I think (and i may be wrong) Dynapar DOES indeed have the "right" tv (16:9). But most movies are made in 2.35:1 ratio which leaves thin black bars in up/down area.

If you have a DLP widescreen TV, i think you would get the same bars as him. Unless you ONLY buy 16:9 movies.

Sorry, I didn't explain....I was referring to the screen burn-in. Plasma and LCD TVs are prone to burn-in, especially plasma.

I have a Samsung, it will run ~$270 for a bulb! However, when I bought the TV, it was about $1500 less than an equivalent EDTV plasma, ~$5k less than a HDTV plasma!! I will take the $300 bulb, thank you very much. :p

I've been on this board for a while and JUST realized that your avatar is Chelsea's emblem.

So how are you going to watch World Cup in HD? I would love to do that.

OT: Chelsea are pretty much invincible this season. would have been nice if they would have won against betis in champions league.

You may or may not be interested in the pics of my trip to the Carling Cup final in Cardiff back in February....Chelsea 3 Liverpool 2

    woot

edit: oh yeah, about HD...well all 64 matches will be on ABC/ESPN/ESPN2, so I will do whatever it takes to get ESPN HD just for that month. cancel cable after it's all over, just like in 2002. heh.

How did you get tickets to that!?!! Nice pics man, didnt know they had tailgate parties too. Looks like a lot of fun.
Really wanted to go to the Real Madrid vs Chivas (mexico) game that happened earlier this year in soldiers field, chicago. But couldnt get off from work.

I forgot about abc and espn showing all the games. I remember that now, but not sure if they agreed to all games in HD. If that is true then i'm in luck as I already have both in HD. Maybe we can plan a subaru/worldcup hangout day/night and watch one of the semifinals/finals next year!

I have a friend who moved here to Mpls from London last year, he does a lot of traveling for his job and kept his pair of season tickets at Stamford Bridge, so he got me a ticket. Fun weekend, flew out of here Friday night and was back Monday evening. I was at the 5-0 drubbing of Man City in March 2003 as well. I'll be going to a game this spring probably, not sure which one yet.
