whats the difference besides the ratios and the RA having a little more torque handling strength? Which do you think would be best to go with? http://www.rallispec.com/prod_trans.htm
Save your money for a PPG set or a six speed. The cost of one of those plus the installation just isn't worth the marginal increase in strength. Call Andrewtech and ask them how many RA geaboxes they've torn down and replaced with PPG stuff.
Depends on which version gearset you get. V5, V6, or something else? Some were hardened, some were cryotreated. I would say if you're going more than 100 HP above stock, then you should go with PPG's. You can have 50 more HP than stock and still be fine, or you can have stock HP levels and it will blow up on you. It all really depends on how you shift. ~Dan
It is 100% this. If you shift like a raped ape, you will break your tranny no matter how much power you're putting down. Just ask Chet aka Paul Revere, that moron grenaded like 4 transmissions, possibly more that he hid from us in a pile of shame. If you know that you can't be bothered to shift like a sane individual, then you should save your money and get a PPG gearset. Up to the point where you need a PPG gearset, you should be fine with the stocker by just driving it correctly.
Id just like custom/different/better (no super low first gear/usable overdrive) performance gear ratios better suited to my motors power ... but I don't like how the 6 speed is 150lbs more than a 5 speed
well i can tell you right now in the last week i've put together a 6 speed for $2275 dollars + fluids and some new axle seals. you're looking at ATLEAST another 1000 dollars MORE just for the ppg gears alone and they are the only gears worth getting. i was the first person to say i'm never every getting a 6 speed, then i paid nearly 1/3 for the whole swap vs getting just a built 5 speed box on here.
^ Yeah, I couldn't put my finger on it, or find something reliable within an hour or two of searching. All I knew is that the 6mt isn't even close to a 4EAT, which is a serious hog. I can still lift a 6mt alone (barely). 4EAT, forget it. I had to weld 1/8th in plate to my jack to balance it. Either way, 85 < 150, by a decent amount. Worth the weight, imho.
Yes, I can also barely lift a 6MT alone. Lucky, I have never had to deal with lifting a 4EAT. And I would also say the weight increase from 5MT to 6MT is not a major factor, especially considering its all underneath the car (lower center of gravity). ~Dan
For sure. Losing 30lb from your torso would counter act the moment arm of a 6mt. Bigger turbos and intercoolers are more of a factor than a reliable lump of metal in the guts of a Subaru in terms of handling. Its best to weigh your battles.
to answer the original question... The STi RA 5spd ratios are geared to have smaller spacing in between shifts. They slightly made first gear longer so the spacing when shifting into 2nd gear would be less. They made the ratios 2-4 shorter as well as 5th gear, but the spacing on the 4-5 shift is kind of eww. The reg STi 5spd ratios gears are spaced more like a 2.5RS. The difference in the STi vs 2.5RS is in the 4-5 shift. The STi has a smaller spacing than the 2.5RS. These ratios are also found in the USDM '05+ LGT 5spd (excluding the 2010 6spd) and the '08+ WRX 5spd. Few differences are that they come with different final drives of a 4.111 in the early LGT, 3.900 in the later LGT and '08+ WRX. The JDM STi with the same gear ratios come with a 4.444, which its ratios feel really similar to a 2.5RS. I got to drive a 2.5RS with STi Ver4 tranny. See if this helps you...unless you read this already. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1689781 If you're looking for a PPG tranny, I'd recommend a new rebuilt one so you have nice new synchros. Unless you can find one that is fairly newly rebuilt. I run a JDM DCCD 6spd. The extra weight.....ya it weighs some...it's just like you and your GF in the car when it's only you. However I bought my 6spd for the ratios since it matches what I plan to do with the car, track fun!!! So select according to your application, you'll be more happy in the end.
im pretty sure of getting my stock 2002 trans rebuilt so i would just through new syncros and all the stuff it needs in it. I would like to do the 6 speed swap but I cant realy source one that comes with a rear diff and other parts cause i dont wanna source one together, but if i have to i will parts list of what i need for the 6 speed swap so i dont have to look it up
Everything needed for a complete STI 6 speed drivetrain swap into an 02 http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1672474 I'm not speaking with any experience but I think most of the stuff posted in the stickies is pretty good here. Oh hi Fuji!
