http://www.flickr.com/photos/29843549@N08/sets/72157611291806350/ Probably the quickest I've ever had them up. Synopsis: The camera really had no idea what do to with all the white on the ground, so a lot of the pics are darker, and I can correct that per photo upon request. The blurry-ish ones near the front of the set are from the lens filter icing up in the snow and wind, a problem I solved by picking one corner to shoot away from the wind for the remainder of the day. The random pic of Emily in the middle was a camera test to make sure nothing was fogged before we went back outside after lunch. She wanted it so I left it in there. But between the icing, the gusting wind, my cold face, and the less than ideal lighting, I'd say that these didn't come out too terribly. Enjoy!
wow, camera sucks.... Okay, that was a joke, it just seems to be the new sport on here (ripping peoples stuff to shreds)((some people should get lives)) On a serious note, those pics are tight!!! 407 pics of fun driving and 1 pic of a girl, thats what i call a good album lol. Looks like a lot of fun everyone was having out there... Hope I can attend if there is one next year; how many toal drivers did you have show? Looks like a fleet of suby's and other awd cars!! ; )
nice pics. thank you! http://www.flickr.com/photos/29843549@N08/3109800260/in/set-72157611291806350/ (start of the turn, keep clicking next) I remember this run, this one I did ok using a pendulum turn on the pin turn. I knew I had the backend swinging out going into the pin, but I didn't realize it was this extreme.
some of the long standing guys are a little less bent out of shape lol Thanks for posting up those pics!!!! contribution is what makes this site amazing and it should have far more of it. no matter the quality of contribution.... contribution is still effort to make this a better place.
Thanks for posting the pics! It is wierd to see a pic of the duster and know that I am the one driving it.
thanks for coming out and taking the pics. i think they came out good for the conditions you were dealing with. thanks! -Dan
No problem. As I've said before, it's always a blast taking pics at events like this, and it's your guy's driving that makes it happen. Leaving kinda sucked though, I'm pretty sure everyone heard me trying to get the Acura out of there... First time I've ever bounced it off the rev limiter.
LOL. Emily had a choice comment about that which almost made me fall over laughing on the shoulder of 169.
Looks like an interesting event. I may have to try getting in on it if it happens again next year. As for snow messing with the exposure - you should have an exposure compensation on your cam somewhere (you probably already know that though) - if its not a DSLR it's probably buried in the menus somewhere. Crank it up a ways (brighter/positive #'s). IMO - it's fine to have big snow patches overexposed for the sake of the rest of the photo. Test shots when arriving in new lighting FTW.
Yeah, I haven't played around with this camera too much, seeing as it's not actually mine, but hopefully by next season I'll have my own equipment and know how to use it. But as long as I've been shooting, with any camera, I haven't run into this before. I can't remember ever having shot on cloudy, snowy days, either, so that would explain it. Lesson learned.
Most cams on auto settings use whats called metered exposure. It varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and even model to model, but it basically looks at a bunch of points in the picture to automatically adjust. If a bunch of spots are blazing bright white it thinks the photo is too bright and turns the exposure down making the rest darker. The photos aren't actually all that bad - and its definitely nice to see what was going on there after I heard all about it from someone else!!
So what was the deal with Josh and the other two cars pulled off on a side road about two miles south of the site? We didn't see you in time to stop on that ice. I hope you all made it home ok.
I know that Josh called back and said he though his suspension was broken... We thought it was probably just ice & snow in the wheels, wheelwells or springs. I suspect it was something like that. Certainly they were long gone by the time I came by.
On a day like yesterday, you could have even gone old school, metered off a 17% gray card (the SCCA-LoL trailer is pretty close :laugh and just shot in manual exposure mode all day. The lighting wasn't going to change a lot, very diffuse light through the clouds most of the day.
Yeah, he made it home fine. Just cleanded out a bunch of ice and did a visual inspection on front suspension on one side, double checked all the lug nuts, etc.
Not seriously loose, though - just a bit. No kidding. I started slowing down immediately on seeing josh and just barely made the corner onto that road. Shortly after, i saw joel wagging his tail for 500 feet...
What kind of lugs did Josh have? Even a little bit loose tuerns into a lot loose pretty quickly. The only lugs I've ever had back off under hard use were the Dorman brands they sell cheap at the auto parts chains. I think the thread on those actually deforms under stress and they loosen up. Cheap steel. Otherwise, the only times I've seen it has been user error.
I didn't see Josh's nuts, but Sheen did and he said they had the wrong kind of seat for the wheels, which might explain why they weren't holding.
Yeah, his nuts were totally the wrong shape. By "a little loose" i meant "his wheels didn't fall off by about half a thread."
Josh's nuts are dirty and old. His lugnuts were messed up too. We got them switched out for stock acorn nuts today so all is well. His fender liner on the other hand...
Just don't! ...And Nate, what's the deal? I come to one rally-x, rip it up, have fun, do well....then no return? Come play!!!!
Why thank you! In looking back through the events I've shot, with an exception of not having the Canon for the Elk River event, I've been steadily improving. I'll have to drag the camera along to any snow drift events I may be attending. And sadly, I didn't get any pics of Josh's nuts. I might have been able to make a few bucks selling them online...
its called other priorities.. FAMILY!! I can go rip it up in my backyard any day I will be back more... MAYBE... just depends how much I decide to stay involved with subarus etc
Wow! Everyone wants my nuts! At first I was going to shake it off as snow in the tires, but i had never had "snow in the tires" almost put me in the ditch! The car was pulling severely to the right. So yeah, wrong lugs+WOTdori-dorisn0wfunz= serious wobbles! The front right tire nearly came off. Another 2-3 miles and i'm sure that it would have! Like the roads on the way home weren't bad enough as it was. After a trip around the car with Andrew's torque wrench, we came to find ALL 20 lugs were loose in some way, shape, or form!:eek3: Tightened everything down and made it to an exit with a pressure washer to clean some of the mess out of the rims and off of the car, retorqued one more time for good measures and made the rest of the journey home. Just wanted to say thanks again to Andrew and Joel for the use of the tools(and gloves!!) And big thanks to Sheen for helping with getting everything buttoned up on my car as always! Also, big thanks to Mark Holden and all of the people who taught/volunteered with this day of driving and learning! I really had a good time and feel that i'll be able to take some of the techniques that i've learned into next seasons RallyX!
Your gloves weren't working for the actual 'wrenching on the car', had to borrow Joel's! They worked very nice at keeping my hands warm all day tho! And added a little JDMness to my attire! Also...Thanks for the pics! omnom!.....EEEEEEE-BRAKE!!!!!!!
