And a big fat MF'ing muchas gracias thanks and such to: Ben and Brian @ MTKA Subaru Service Dept...srsly, I couldn't do any of this without you guys. Best friends and best brains a guy could have working with him! You guys need a shop name so I can paste it all over my car... Erik @ MTKA Parts Dept...for the Readymix discount. And for viciously removing the EJ22T from the Legacy wagon with no regard for personal safety or the safety of others. Shay: For telekineticly making Brian assemble the shortblock with no issues or problems...if the block fails, it falls your shoulders. t3hw00t d0t c0m: For keeping the build interesting. D&G Motors: For the outstanding service and for the excellent work on the bore and balance of the block and internals. I'm bringing this bitch by your shop when I finish it up. ILLICITWRX: For the best deal in the history of deals on fuel rails and headstuds! Josh @ ImportImageRacing: And early thank you for the great deal on that clutch My checking account: For paying for all this crap.
I don't have a bellmouth downpipe? It has two holes in it...which could be a good thing or a bad thing in terms of goatse business. If you know what I mean?
What are you doing about the bottom starter bolt? Since the older mot0rs are only held together by the two bottom studs and top two bolts, there's no drilled and tapped holes for the other four bolts in newer cars. I had to tap the hole on the botom side of the starter, since the 6mt has no stud on the bottom for it. Actually I just made a self-tapping bolt, and it took about 20 minutes of slowly going in and out to thread it. Ahh the joys of custom stuff The rest look good though.
What I did was just put on the TOP bolt when I put on my EJ22T Shortblock on my '99 L wagon. That's what i have now too. Starts up just fine. BUT if you want safety, ya, thread in a stub for your starter on the tranny.
Depends, if the deal I'm waiting on goes through, the turbo goes to Aspitfire. If the deal with the 35R doesn't go through, then Josh still has dibs when I eventually can purchase the turbo setup.
Still waiting on the turbo deal to go through. Things went south on it so I'm still trying to work that out. But here are some shots to ease your mind...
NO, I don't have the PPG gears yet. I'm tentatively planning on wrecking my WRX gearset with the current setup. I figure I have alot of time between now and when my setup is fully built, broken in and tuned properly. It should do fine on a dyno since the gears wont be shock loaded much. But I figure once the tune is done I'll want to be in the process of purchasing a set or really close. And yes, stock resurfaced flywheel.
I got shipping notices for the pullies and the headgaskets. Still need turbo and injectors and a boost controller.
An update for those of you that don't surf t3hw00t. The Helix cams are junk. The journals are the wrong size so they fit way too tightly in the heads....so tight that it is impossible to turn them when torqued. The front most journals look like they weren't machined, but instead chewed out of steel by a monkey that has rocks for teeth. None of the center journals match, one has a deep groove cut into it, one has no groove at all, and the other two have slightly different depth grooves in them. They shouldn't have any grooves at all. On the good side, the Helix valvetrain bits were A+ top notch stuff. Fit perfectly. And the absolute plus side to all of it is that Gruppe-S has agreed to give me retail price on the cams themselves and I get to keep the valvetrain stuff! I'm looking into BrianCrower 272 cams, or possibly Kelford. Depending on what Gruppe-S can find me. So that is the current hold up. If I had the cams today, the long block would be ready to put in the car by Friday...except I need to order the PPG gearset still. So, the list of Things to Do is as follows: Remove transmission Break down transmission Get cams from Gruppe-S Install cams into heads and finish assembling shortblock Order PPGs. Once all that is done, I should be on my way to finishing up. I'm waiting on some money to come in, it is coming, just don't know when just yet. Hopefully I can get it done, installed, and broken in in time for the Dyno tuning session this spring.
wow, glad i havent ordered cams yet. do you think that you just got the odd set of really messed up monkey chewed cams? or do you think more will be like that? cant wait to see the mix-wrx being creativly piloted down the roads again.
From what Gruppe-S told me, Helix has stopped production of hte cams altogether until they can get the Q/A thing figured out. But honestly, the best deal for cams that I've found thus far is the Brian Crower Stg2 cams. 450 for the set from Gruppe-S according to Max. Even if they could source me another set of Helix camshafts, I'd probably pass at this point. And yeah, you have no idea how excited I am to drive my car again. It has been WAY too long
Yeah, the magwag is 'fun' but last Friday when I got it stuck in the snow at the UPS lot, it made me wish I had the Subaru back on the road. Not that the Subaru will be much different in the snow, but it is still more fun getting the Subaru stuck in the snow than it is the MagWag.
lol...gotta be a b--ch to push the wag out of the snow! But, rear wheel drive can be FTW given the proper driving conditions!!
As long as it doesn't involve turning more than 180 degrees, I'm set. Doing donuts is what kills it. It can't keep its momentum going.
