So on Thursday I noticed a sudden noise from the rear when backing up. Everything looked good when I was checking around so I decided to drop the fluid for the diff. and look what I found...looks like a bomb went off in there Is this normal? I don't launch my car so I'm a bit puzzled how this could happen so suddenly. The last time I changed it out I had no issues and the fuild that came out still looked new. car is under warranty
hmmmm good luck on getting that warrantied... I called regarding mine... so much for the 5yr 100,000 mile drivetrain warranty I bought... got told byt he service dude it probably happened when you turned tightly into a parking space... hmmmm lets hope I dont have to park my car anytime soon at a mall.... arsewipe... I put a quaife LSD in mine... NO teeth inside to go crunch anymore... but damn pricey... as much as buyng a whole new rear end... you can get a used one for a couple of hundred or go dealer and pay starting at around $900ish... but you sure did smash some teeth... kinda weird how it JUST happened... scary really isnt it... mine was whining and getting louder.. I didnt have any chunks in mine when I drained it but lots of little shards... but only one tooth on the planetry gears was chipped... Good luck
ps... did you use synthetic last time.... cause my guess is that was the main cause.... synthetic is great for engines but not so good where gears are concerned.... I know others have opinions on this and may disagree... but I go with the replaced rear diff in an 03 with under 50000m and the opinion / experience of technician of over 30 years who has worked on Air Force, planes to Bentleys, porsches, MErcededs, BMW's, ROlls Royce's, Ferraris, and many other expensive cars....
yeah I would would see what Biran can find out for ya... he seems like a great guy... not sure what he can do though... the problem you have is they have to pull it out to examine it and if they say they wont cover it then you are stuck there witht he car pulled half apart... I already had mine out when I called which also didnt help.. but I told them that after I basically got told "SUCKER' the way I see it is it is cheaper then a gearbox but not by much... ha ha ha... it isnt really that hard to change.. just a lot of bolts etc to remove... id hate to do it on my back with jack stands I can tell you that much... mine sat for 3 days in my shop while I chased bearings.. got the last 2 in teh state for side bearings... anyways I digress... Give Brian a shout... Minnetonka is whom I called... forget them
Hopefully its just the ring gear or the pinion. Yeah, I'll attest to systhetic not being so great for tranny's/diffs. I had new syncros put in mine, ran nothing but Redline, and guess what, 2.5 years later it starts grinding again. I put some dino oil back in and it work a hell of a lot better. wierd
Just an update. My warranty is covering it. Good thing too, it's 1250 for the replacement. Subaru just replaces the whole diff instead of replacing parts. So I'll get my car back next week sometime with a new rear end!!! THE WHOLE STORY BELOW
finally received word that my warranty is covering the replacement of my rear diff. Evidentially the warranty company was real jerks about covering it due to my aftermarket parts. Well, thanks to Mike at the Morries Minnetonka service department we are squared away. Big time thanks to him for standing up for me!!!!!!!!!!! I'll have to send over a thank you card with something for him.) I should have my car back Friday!! after thought....beware of AutoXtra sold through Wells Fargo...not a customer service oriented company
Mike's a good guy, if you want to bring him something...bring in something for his new baby girl! Or his dog Bear!
finally! wow, finally got the car back yesterday. no more whining noises!!! glad to have it back....kudos to morries mntka service!!!
