ok, so i've been getting a clunk on the rear of the sti.
it happens over bumps, on cornering, and on acel/decel. i assumed that it was a sway bar or one of those arms down there so i made an apointment to have it looked like and started convincing my wife how i should get the hotchkins street kit. :)

well, it's progressively worse, so bad that i invisioned the rearend dropping out on the freeway..
with a my apointment not untill next week, i decided to put it on the ramps and go underneath to try and find the problem.

    nothing is lose.
endlinks, swaybay, those arm thingies, nothing..

i start looking at the diff, and the pass side has a coating of oil on it. i grab the pass side shaft and give it a tug. clump clump..
i tug on the drivers side, ... clump clump...

question #1 is it reasonable to assume that i have borked half shafts?
question #2 what is the probability that this could happen without any signifigant launching? could daily driving at 280whp do this?

    another theory:

you have a bad strut. Happens all the time on STis. I have had the same problem, along with 2 other people I know.

If you want me to listen to it, I can verify for you. I know the sounds all too well.

And don't drive on it more than you have to, you can lose your CV if it bottoms, adding a good 1k in repains/work to the damage. If this is the case then the fluid could be axle grease... It can fly quite a ways inside there

anyways, I can take a look for you. I've seen the strut problems before

If you keep driving it at your ride height, you're going to need the number of my axle replacement guy. I'd not drive it at all if you want to keep the CV on the side its on.

The strut problem is becuase of the version 8 tops. I really don't know STi owners who havent gotten it.

I wonder if reverting to an STi ver 7 setup would help. I only blow front sturts.

A small mount of play in your axle shaft assemblies is normal. This is due to your DOJs. You mentioned oil all over back there? Perhaps a torn boot on a DOJ? Was it thick, booger like, bearing grease (used to pack yoru CV and DOJ boots); or thiner like gear oil from the diff?

definitly a thin oil, right on the side of the diff.
    not a grease at all.

i just had the 30k service done, which includes a diff service. i'm still not 100% thinking all is well. after the struts are replaced i'll clean it off really well and look for new leakage.

There is a seal on the outside of the carier. Might be sweating some gear oil :(
