i put on my perrin rear bar, mounts, and endlinks tonight and now i have a loud metal on metal sounding clunk noise. happens mostly between shifts if it jerks or i can make the noise resonate if i put it in 5th at a low speed and bog it. ive narrowed it down to the passenger side and ive checked everything like 3 times, has anyone else had this problem after a swaybar install? any suggestions?

I would check to see if there is any lose parts that need to be tighten. If it started after the install its problem something you may have missed.

yeah it happened imediately after the install so its obviously somthing from that, i emailed perrin to see if they have any ideas. i rechecked everything and it was all tight per their specs and it still clunked. when i get out of work today i'm gonna try puttin the stock endlinks back or maybe just disconnecting the bar, drive around with different combinations till i pinpoint the sound.

    1) make sure your swaybar bushings are really well greased. usning a high quality synthetic grease helps a lot. I use mobil 1 grease on mine, and I have never heard any bushing sqak or clunk. I hae the whiteline Mounts with the whiteline bushings however.

    2) Reach under the car when its on ramps/jacked up. grab an endlink. (theyre pillowballs I assume)

the ends should move around quite a bit. When your bar transfers it slams those things around. It makes a lot of noise. Just doing it with your hand should let you know if that's the noise you're hearing. If it is, get used to it, because its going to be that way forever. Urethane bushing endlinks will considerably cut down on this noise. (kartboy, whiteline)

k i have narrowed it down to not being the swaybar at all, i emailed perrin and they said it could be the endlinks so i swapped those back to stock with the perrin bar still on, still made the noise. so i pulled the entire bar and mounts off now and guess what, still makes the noise. ive gone through my suspension and just about every bolt/connection under the car and cant find this noise. ive been workin on it for about 3 hours today and an hour or so last night after the install and its starting to really piss me off. right now i am at the point of no bar or endlinks in the rear and its still doing it.

the noise is exactly this. letting the clutch out in between shifts if i jerk the car at all it makes a clunk. bogg the car down in 5th at low speed the clunk turns to a very loud rattle and sounds like a machine gun and can basically do this on command by bogging it down and it will keeep going as long as you bog it. i drove the car in and out of the driveway at different angles and it doesnt make any noise, same with cornering and going over bumps it doesnt make any noise. so ive basically eliminated the suspension. again it never made this noise or anything like it before the swaybar installation and everything i touched doing that i have checked and rechecked and removed and it still makes the noise, to me sitting in the driver seat driving it sounds like its coming from the passanger side between the front and rear seat, or somewhere in that direction. let me know if you can think of anything to check.

passenger side swaybar mount bolt tightness?

The one under the fuel line is very difficlt to properly tighten. maybe it's that?

Did you jack up the car when you put the sway bar on? If so, what jack point did you use in the back? There's a cross-member back there that looks like it would be a good jack point, but it's not. It's rubber mounted. I bent the lip on that cross-member on my car once and it made the exact clunking sound you are describing. The metal lip started hitting the frame in certain situations... I just used two big adjustable wrenches to bend the lip back and the sound went away.

prezawagon you may have just made my weekend, i think i made the exact mistake you did because i did jack it up on those to begin with, and thats exactly where the noise sounds like it is coming from. i cant wait till tomorrow to check this out because i am really hoping thats what it is then it should be an easy fix. these cars sure dont have much for jack points. i hope this fixes it.

That for a jacking point? Try the rear differential next time, 'cause Subaru said so. :p

yeah i found that out, to me that mount looked pretty sturdy but it ended up not being as strong as it looked, it really wasnt a big deal though i just had to take the brace off and put it in the vice and straighten it out. now quit replying to this thread so it will drop to the bottom of the page and disapear and no one will ever know of my stupid mistake :D. good news is i got the noise taken care of, got my rear sway and endlinks back on, and my turbo back exhaust all done today and everything is perfect.
