What's wrong with your current transmission? Just grinding gears?

What's a performance synchro? Just get OEM ones from the dealership.

I'm not hugely familiar with the design of th subaru 5 speed, but I would suspect that the only whay that 3rd isn't grabbing is if you have sheared all of the teeth off of that gear, and that would mean that you have a bunch of metal pieces floating around in your transmission. If I were in this situation I would probably stop driving the car to prevent further damage.

what do you mean 3rd gear won't grab? does the shifter keep popping back out of 3rd or can does it stay in 3rd but nothing happens?

Sounds like you were granny-shifting and not double-clutching. Like you should.

nightcrawlers, you can try mfactory or ppg gears if you want something beefier than stock. Are you running the 18g that the previous owner put on the car? Or something bigger?

Well since I feel I have quite a bit of experience with blowing up transmissions I have to ask if it is making a lot of noise? Every time I blew one up I could TELL. LoL
