Aight everyone I just went and picked up my suby from Chi-town and I got it home and washed her and found lil tar specks all it. It is from driving through all that consruction on the way home. I really want to put a good coat of wax on it but I dont want too untill I remove all the tar. I tried bug and tar remover and it didnt do the trick. It will sort of come off if I use my finger nail, but that takes for ever and doesnt work that good. Does anyone have any sujestions on how to remove it?

at work we use a product called "auto solv" it's basically a label remover, i am not sure what kind of product you can buy at a store but i would look for a label remover type product, it's works good for me, but the stuff we have is "professional grade"

Aircraft Stripper makes a decal remover also..... that will take anything off..... just dont get the kind intended for removing paint..... that might cause a problem

I am a big fan of goo gone too.
I also like the 3M orange citrus cleaner.

    Try Two:

Aight so I went and got a spunge that was a lil rough but car safe and tried it with that. I made a lil progress but it still isnt really coming off. I tryed some nail polish remover in a lil spot and it came off right away. Question is that going to hurt my paint? I didnt wanna do to much of it in fear that it is going to mess up my paint...

I believe nail polish remover has acetone in it. Acetone will eat away at your paint and clearcoat.

Honestly, I'm not sure. I've heard of some people using very little acetone, as in using a lightly damped rag and wiping the surface, and still being okay. I think if its still shiny where you wiped, you should be alright. And if you used a little, I wouldn't worry to much about it. Maybe someone who knows more about paint surfaces can chime in.

BTW, some nail polish removers are acetone free. If you wanted to check the stuff you used.

The clearcoat is probably fine if it was a little and it was wiped off quickly. Yr wax was likely taken off by the nail polish remover tho.

Have you tried clay bar and a cutting polish? Medium grade clay bar has always worked for me.

Where is the tar? On the sideskirts or on a body panel? If on the side skirts, you could try this... get any bug and tar remover from any auto store, wrap a credit card in yr terry cloth, and use that to carefully scrape the tar off at an angle. Then clean up the spot and wax it.

    Here's another fairly informative thread:

It is all over my hood and my roof and my trunk! I must have really hit a good spot its all over the place. Also I just bought the car and I dont think the dude ever hand waxed it soo it is really stuck on there good. I think if there would have been a nice coat of wax it would be coming off better.

That is a good idea I will try that tommrow when I atempt it for the third time!

If you still cant get it out I can give it a try for you... you'd have to drive out to the cities tho.

The mr. clean scrubber might work if you soak it in quick detailer and get the surface really slippery with qd and shampoo.
Either way, you'll probably want to clay then polish the car before you wax it. Especially if the paint is in rough shape like it sounds.

Anyway, it sounds like a nightmare, good luck!

Tried the goo-gone, didnt have any luck! I have a guy coming over on wed that I hope will be able to get it out for me. He used to detail cars and I think he is going to try to buff it. Also tommrow I am going to call a few paint places and ask them for sujestions on how to remove it. It really isnt too noticeable but there still there and I cant wax or anything till it is gone but if I dont point them out people wont even notice. It just sucks that I bought a fairly new car and there is tar all over it.

lol thanks for looking out on me though I knew enough not to try somthing like that. I think I will call a few dealers tommrow and see if they have anything and then if that doesnt go through then I am just going to get some clay. Is there anything that I should know before using it? Keep in mind that the person that had the car before me I dont think had ever hand waxed it soo is the clay going to F anything up?

The clay is going to get rid of all the crap that is stuck in your neglected paint. Don't even bother calling the dealer, just go pick up the kit from any auto store.

Aight tryed the clay **** with no luck. So what I did is I took it too a detailer and he tryed a few things. It turns out that the **** is tree sap. I have no idea when that happen but he had me get some Iso Heet stuff. It is used to keep your gas from frezzing in the winter. That stuff seems to do the trick but it is like 100 + hear today so I think I will wait till it cools off a lil bit before doing the whole car. It takes most of it off and only on the big spots it leaves a lil yellow resadu that I hope will come out when I buff and then re-wax. Thanks for everyones help and I will post pictures when I get her all cleaned up.

    Trees= Suck haha
