Can anyone offer me advice on:

    1. How to remove the lock cylinder from my door.
    2. Provide me with a PDF factory service manual for a '93 Legacy

    Thanks,
    Sam

Perhaps I should be more clear in my instructions (although I am grateful to LOL of TVs for his advice).

    1. How to remove the lock cylinder from my door without the use of dynamite or a giant drill.
    2. Provide me with a PDF factory service manual for a '93 Legacy (these instructions still stand)

    Thanks,
    Sam

Remove door card and pull back plastic covering around lock area. With the window up you should be able to look in and see the back side of the handle. There will be two rods connected to it from the lock and latch release mechanism. Disconnect these, they are retained by clips much like this, rotate clip away from rod and pull rod out of retainer.

Then there are two 10mm nuts holding the handle to the bracket inside the door. Once you have those out you should be able to lift on the handle and pull it out. The lock cylinder is held in by a circlip.

    Haynes:

15.6 To remove the outside door handle, disengage the actuating rod form the
handle, then remove the handle mounting nuts.
15.8 To remove the key lock cylinder from the outside handle, loosen the spring clip
    (1) securing the cylinder to the handle, then pull the cylinder out of the handle.

looks like you need to take the door trim panel out.

Thank you for the link, Phil (lots of good stuff there, but no diagrams). Not to worry though, as you and Threshld have both provided what should be good enough info to have a shot at it.

In case anyone's curious, I lost my keys last week (the Secret Service threw them away - - no kidding) so I went to the Sub dealer to get the keycode. Turns out the car was originally sold by Morries and they didn't save the code in Subaru's (nor their own) database. I called a locksmith and he quoted me $125 to come over to the car, remove the cylinder and make a new key. I asked him how much if I take the cylinder out myself and he said $25. Hmm, no brainer, eh?

Thanks again, guys. I'll post a photo and info in case anyone looks into this thread in the future.

    It's Obama's fault.

Sam, make Mike take your car apart.

I went to see the President the other day and when I put all my **** on the table next to the metal detector I must have grabbed my camera, phone, and other stuff but forgot my keys. I called up the Secret Service to ask if they had them and they told me they throw everything away that gets left there. Boo.

I asked Mike if he'd give me a ride to the Subaru dealership to look into getting a key made day before yesterday and he said that would be a hassle. So I can't imagine how much of a hassle it might be if I asked him to take my door apart.
