How hard is this? My axle CV is shot and Napa charges $57 with a core exchange but I need to use my original axle stub. How do you take the stub off and how difficult is it to do correctly?

tap the pin out of it with a hammer/punch and slide it off.

What car? If its the T-lego those are female inner axle stubs. There is a roll pin on the inside of the shaft just before it enters the diff. Use a punch to hammer it out. You can see what im talking about in this picture:

Green ones are Impreza male rear axles and the others are female legacy axles.

As far as i know you cant actually remove the stub from the rear diff without pulling the back plate and removing the snap rings, nor should you have to when replacing an axle

That easy, huh? OK. I'll get after it, then.

Are you talking about the spring pin that holds the axle to the stub on the differential? I think the guy at Napa has me confused because I'm looking at the exploded diagram of the axle and the only pin is the one that holds the whole axle to the differential. As far as I remember the axle stubs are IN the differential.

Also be aware that hole is offset from center. So when installing it again, spy down the hole and make sure its lined up properly. If you cant get the pin back in all the way pull it out and spin it 180* and it will work.

Yes. This. I know that mine is like that. I took the axles off earlier this year and got the opportunity to play with those spring pins and the chamfered holes. I guess I'll pull the whole axle off an bring it down to Napa.

I thought so but he mentioned specifically that I needed to keep the inner axle stubs. I guess that won't be a problem since they're in the diff.

    Thanks for the help.

Yeah only removable stubs ive seen are the 04 sti front diff stubs. I had to use them in my 06 wrx gearbox to use my t-lego front axles.

I've had someone tell me at one time that on an AWD car you want to replace the axles in pairs, if not all at the same time? Any merit to this?

^ Abosolutely not. Would you replace your wheel bearings in pairs? Just service as needed.

agreed, no need to replace in pairs.

first gen legacy rears have removable stubs that are attached to the DOJ cup with a spring pin (3/16" punch to remove it). I suspect the reman's don't come with one of these......consider yourself lucky they weren't rusted on! I've had to do some serious pounding.

also, EA-series subarus have a very similar stub, except it's actually bolted to the diff with an E10mm torx bolt in the middle of the stub.
