I was thinking there are a lot of repeat threads asking where to get this or that.

Maybe we could start a few sections (ie south west, north west.....) with recommendations of body shops, parts stores, tire places and the such that get continually asked.

It may cut down on some of the repeat threads due to the fact the info will always be in one spot, and probably wont have that many pages of threads to search through to find it.

    just an idea

    1, 2, 3.... discuss.

Good in theory, but it requires people to use the search function. Otherwise they'll never know it is there. Kinda like the newbie Q/A forum. We have it, but we still get "Which is best BOV for me?" threads.

Ya, I was actually thinking about disableing the search function with the upgrade. I figure, not used = not needed.

    Russ

Of course I am only partially kidding. We were working on the tech area to keep alot of into there, but like with most other things, people run out of time to get things done. If you want to make some threads with locations for certain things, go for it. They can be moved and stickied to wherever once they are done.

Don't get rid of the search...I use it all the time! It's one of those things where it seems like no one is using it because those are the only people you encounter. Then there are people like me who rarely start new threads because we find what we are looking for through searching...

Anyway, I like the idea of breaking into section...that would be helpful for different meets and other region specific stuff.

iwsti has a feature that when you put a new thread title in when you are making the thread it pulls up related threads so you don't repost them. thought it was a great idea.

On a side note, i was thinking it would be nice if the wtb,fs,gb forum had a sub forum for each.

I would suggest some more moderation in the tech threads. (What what in the butt? Etchy suggesting more moderation? Please bear with me.) Dedicate a couple mods to put on the tech-nazi hat and keep things on topic, Make the appropriate stickies, and when necessary do the following:

noob: Hullo, I was practicing for WRC in the snow and smashed my front quarter panel. Any good body shops?
mod: Welcome. The answer to your question lies in the sticky prominently located at the top of this forum. Here is a link: http://www.mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=STICKY. This thread is now locked. Next time use the search. Enjoy your stay.

    -and-
    1. Trim the fat from tech forums. If the topic gets OT, slice the posts that don't pertain to the subject and ad a post that reads: Don't make me do that again. -friendly mod. If it happens again, lock the thread.
    2. Basic grammar and spelling. Seriously. I really do try and contribute to the areas that I know what I'm talking about. But it's really hard to do that when I can't read what the OP is asking. I'm not talking about properly placed apostrophes and proper usage of semi-colons. I'm talking about endless sentences that have no point and flagrant use of IM-isms to the point I have no idea what the OP is talking about. I just ignore those posts but I'm guessing that if a mod would chime in with, "OP, fix your post so we can read it and understand your problem. If you can't take the time to ask a proper question don't expect us to take the time to give you an answer," once or twice things would get better. Quickly.

Cliffs: 1. Make stickies and point people to the stickies before locking their 100th iteration of "I installed a CAI and now my car runs like ****."
    2. If a thread gets off topic, slice the BS out of the thread and drop a subtle warning. If the same thread goes ape**** again, lock it.
    3. Basic spelling and grammar or thread goes bye bye.

There have been many complaints that this site is 80/20 OT to Tech. I would suggest raising and enforcing the standards of posting in the tech threads to help alleviate that. It seems counter-intuitive but I know that I do 90% of my tech searches and postings on other sites because the signal to noise ratio here is WAY too low. There seems to be more of an emphasis on moderating people for bypassing the swear filter and avatar guidelines than moderating the content of the tech threads. Crank up the standards for posting in tech and more people will see it as a worthwhile place to get info instead of an obligatory section for a car-site that's really about OT and ricer meets.

But this is just one man's opinion.

But isn't that what NASIOC is for?

I enjoy this place for the local flavor and that I actually meet the people who join in the ball busterama and eShenanigans.

If that's the case then why even have tech threads here? Just make a tech forum header and have it link directly to NASIOC tech.

I like local flavor, too. I also believe that the local community can contribute just as much, if not more than, NASIOC in regards to tech. However this tech forum is so cluttered with crap and things get off-topic so fast it is frustrating to navigate. For every tech thread I've started here (other than "Where do I get this locally" threads) there is a twin at another one or two sites. Yes, I've gotten good replies here but other, local forums have much less clutter and are easier to navigate because the tech forums are held sacred. Have your local flavor in the other 10-odd forums on this site. Leave tech to tech.

Also, if your answer is 'Go to NASIOC' then I'll counter with, "NASIOC has regional boards AND a very vibrant OT. They also have an awesome for sale section, a great picture gallery, and I hear their moderator forums are the ****. Let's all go to NASIOC."

And that is the plan. The biggest thing is that there will be a group of people who will raise the Nazi flag again as soon as we start. Unfortunately we have too many people that cry about being buthurt. It is going to happen and there will be warnings and bannings. The biggest thing is just having enough time to stay on top of things. But I can tell you this, when the hammer drops, there will be some pissed off people, and the ones that want to start problems can have a time out or 3.

Etchy's ideas sound good to me. Warnings sound alright too, so long as they're fair and you can't get multiple infractions for the same offense, arbitrary points, etc.

How about updating the general site rules to reflect this tho. Maybe also have the general site rules as a sticky in every forum... preferrably at the top where the announcements are.

Whoa. Someone actually listened to me. I'm speechless. OK, not really.

Just make sure that the new rules are applied evenly across the board. Favoritism is easily spotted by even the most casual internet observer.

As for people bitching: People bitch. Especially on the internet. Don't indulge their bitching when they break the rules. Don't dance to their fiddle. Don't be the puppet on their string.

What a bunch of bishes bishing about bishes. Like whores complaining about VD.;)

Sheen makes a very valid point re cronyism and double jeopardy. Save the gang bro rape for other sites.

Also, when you quote a tome, it is *ok* to paraphrase it.
