I am looking to get some machining done. Most of it can be done on a lathe. Anyone have any recommendations or a lathe of their own?
Dude, you should mill out a metal ass shift "knob." Be different and have the first butthole knob that you have to put your fist IN to operate.
This is a preliminary design. I am looking at raw material options but it would likely be steel or aluminum. I think I am going with a 2 piece design because I want to have the ball leather wrapped. An interesting option was presented to me which is to use a trailer hitch ball. The way trailer hitches are designed may work well with this shifter design.
I don't have a ball turning attachment yet, but will be getting one soon. What is the overall diameter on that puppy?
Thanks for asking! 1. It wont be heavy as **** 2. It wont be lighter than a stock knob 3. It will be leather wrapped so I dont have to wear gloves while driving 4. It will cost less than most aftermarket knobs 5. Its exactly what I want
I'm curious how you'll do the leather wrap. I would love a leather wrapped version of the heavy-weight round knob that I have.
Machinist right here sir, I have been running mastercam for the last 4 years and have made quite a few things for myself for my car on 3 axis cnc machine center (hurco vm1 & vm3), cnc lathe (hurco tm1, and southwest industries), shift knob turned with top and bottom radius', internal deep thread to slide down to the boot. I made my own design of Subaru, changed it up to give it my own personal touch. Made my own design for the side mount license plate utilizing the tow hook location behind the bumper. I used a solid plate of aluminum to fasten the license plate to, then turned my own threads and shaft to match the tow hook length and specific thread, extended it long enough to sit out front of the bumper, then made my own swivel to attach the plate to the shaft so it can sit to the side a bit to follow the angle of the bumper. Then made an engraved plate to cover up the old license plate location. I am looking to redo the front WRX plate and change up the font since we obtained a new option on our software, and possibly add something else along with it. Haven't decided yet. The front plate and shift knob were powdercoated black before any engraving to stand out, and the license plate side mount powdered black to prevent rusting. If u have any specific questions you can pm me. I am a supervisor and head machinist at a company south of Rochester Minnesota.
I have a good friend down in Faribault that runs his own tannery, took it over from his dad, he can make anything out of leather. Hit me up if interested!
