So, I am currently looking for a Subaru and as it will be my first, I am wanting to purchase something that is as close to stock as possible so I can get a better understanding of how to properly maintain my ride and add on my own mods to make it "mine". I have come across some very good deals, but the majority of them have had mods or are currently modded to my dislike. What it comes down to, I guess, is how reliable can a car be after someone has had mods installed whether it be a bigger turbo or ECU flash etc.. and then decided to part out and return car to stock. Is it worth it to go with a car that has been retuned to stock or not?

Let me know what you have to say on this matter,

    Thanks in advance everyone!

IMO it depends on what the mods were if it was like a 18or20g+ build with stock internals i would shy away from it. Thats just my opinion. But if it is subaru parts like a vf series i would say it is safe. Just my 2 cents. If you are looking for one Here ya go this one is for sale and ready to find a new home

Haha, I LOVE your car too... It has been peaking my interests for about a month now. I just dont know much about getting a car that was modified and then returned to stock. Hence this post ; ) and seeing what people have to say about it. But if things look good you could be expecting a pm from me!

The car that I have now was heavily modified - full STi swapped and beaten on badly. When I purchased the car, the $##$%#%ing kid that I bought it from didn't disclose ANY of this to me and I bought it under the pretense that it was stock and treated kindly. This was NOT the case and I am still fairly upset about it.

I have had very good luck with my car interms of reliability (knock on wood). The most annoying part is that when the "go fast" parts were taken off, some of the bolts were lost and just never put in or replaced with mis-matching bolts or pins or plugs or whatever. Mechanically, though it has been very sound for the past year and a half. I have kept up on the oil changes, went with a different filter, added a boost gauge, swapped out the tranny fluid with the Uncle Scotty's mix, and upgraded the suspension due to a blown rear strut -that's about it.

I am just starting to get to the pont where I am ready to start adding things to the car to increase performance. To this point, all of my mods have been cosmetic. I am piecing together an exhaust system and I'll see Bullwinkle for a tune. I still have a lot of research and learning to do before I get too involved and start spending a lot of $ on parts - and the goal is to know where I want to be at the END of it all before I even start.

Personally, I think that's a very good deal for Jackstand's car.

just so your know tristan wasnt fully aware of the previous history on the car when he sold it to you, he only had it for several weeks before he decided it wasnt for him. the car was replaced with a non raped motor and good working parts to the best of my knowledge. i also believe that he did a full tune up and brakes on it before he sold it to you.

Sorry to get off track :)

Not trying to start anything, but I don't really agree with Jackstand. I don't care what turbo was on it, a craptastic tune with blow up a motor. Doesn't matter if it was a gt35r of a td04, a bad tune will lead to motor damage. I personally would not really care what turbo was on the car, I would be more concerned about the tune that was with the turbo. a 18g/20g will not do more damage to a car than a td04, because it all goes back to the tune. The other thing I would shy away from would be a car that was returned to stock. I have worked on cars that were returned to stock in a quick hurry to be dumped, and it looked like it. Again, not saying that Jackstands car is like this, just something that I have seeing previously. Stripped bolt holes, missing brackets, things not aligned properly, fluid leaks, bad flash on the ecu.....

It all boils down to buyer beware and ask questions. Get someone in the club to go with and look at the car you are interested in.

^Thanks Russ! (that is the kind of info I am looking for)

    2.5~rs Forgiven ; )

And Shibbs, I have also watched your car but it is out of my price range... Around $10-$12 for a wrx and if it was perfect maybe $14 for an sti. I see a bunch of people who have to sell due to not being able to afford their cars and if I buy one, I dont want to have to worry from month to month whether I can keep making payments. Guys know we get screwed on insurance being a male between the ages of 18 and 24. I dont want to buy a car that is just in my price range and then have bad seals or missing screws that could lead to more $$$ being spent.

Which makes it look like maybe the best bet is to just go stock?

Jackstands car was put back to stock carefully. I helped him with it all and all the bolts that he was missing for parts that were taken off were replaced by me. I did give him a lot of the stock parts I had taken off my car in the past so he could get his car done in an orderly fasion and without skimping on parts. With the tranny we both hadnt done that before so I had a good subaru mechanic friend come help us. He can do it with his eyes closed and without his help it would have taken forever! I am not disagreeing with anyone on here, I just wanted to voice my view on his car for anyone interested in it. I did a lot of the replacement of stock parts for him and I took my time to make sure it was done right. The stock turbo he put back on the car doesnt have shaft play either. I checked that myself. The interior is clean not hacked up. pretty nice car. If I had the extra money I would have bought it as a daily driver.

If you can- definately buy a car from MNsubaru ppl. You can get a fair judgement of how the car was was treated/mistreated and who did the modifying and tuning.

If you go elsewhere, bring someone who knows WRXs like the back of their hand so they can identify what's been screwed with.

Nail on the head = you hit it.

I would much rather purchase a heavily modified car from somebody who knew what they were doing vs a cobbled together turd that was put back to stock.

Putting a bunch of stock parts back on a car isn't going to un-do any damage that may have been caused by poorly executed modifications in the past.

besides.. Jackstand's car gave him the sign in name.. like Ray his car spent more time on jack-stands with those mods then getting beat on... only cause the times it was ont he stands it was getting worked on carefully not hacked...

I would say in the range you are looking.. Jackstands is perfect... and you have $$$$ tospare for soem minor mods to your liking

my .02 cents, find a car w/i your range. if it was me, i would be all over jackstands car. I see it everyday other day til he stored it and he drives like a granny lmao! btw, jackstands car is probably the best buy right now for the money with the low miles he has and another thing is that he is on this board so ask any1 about his car, they can tell you!

Definitely check out the craigslist thread. I was in the same boat as you a couple years ago. Decided to go with a car that was completely bone stock with only one owner. Don't be afraid of the high mileage either, I bought my car, 02 WRX, with 95k on it two years ago. I bought my car from a gentleman in his 40's, single owner, with immaculate service records. I even have the original window sticker. The car has run very well and responded to mods excellently.

However, you should be forewarned that things will go on high mileage cars. Two you should be expecting would be a needing a clutch and a radiator. Doesn't mean they may go right away, but start saving for these things. I may be old school, but my general rule of thumb for clutches is anything over 100k one should start planning to replace it.

Again, what I was stating has nothing to do with Jackstand's car, I know that he cares very much for his car and how it is treated. I was just talking a more "in general" thing. But I would definitely bring someone with that knows subaru's. You can never have to many people looking at a car.

As things go it does look better and better.

I agree, it is a pain living all the way up here. Especially when in the market for a car, all the deals are down in MPLS/STP.

So, the general consensus is that it could be a good deal if you know the previous owner? Or have an affiliation of some sort through a group like said forum?

Looking for more of just general information and not so much on particular vehicles.

The only way you could ever get me to buy a used car again is if it was a private sale. At least that way you can get a feel for what kind of person the owner of the car is -- and therefore possibly get a feel for how the car REALLY was treated and maintained.

There's no way in hell I'd get a used car from a dealership.

all depends on the car... I flew to Florida a day after finding mine online... but the Forester is a car that was less likely to have been beat on seeing as it was an auto... ha ha
