I know this doesn't apply to everyone, but for those who eat rice on a daily diet it will. My family had stop by the local Asian market and there were families buying 4 100 lb bags of rice. That was the limit. My mom said there was almost nothing left. It use to be about $25 for a 50 lb bag of rice and has jumped to about $40. http://news.scotsman.com/world/Global-food-crisis-looms-as.3996034.jp
I have a friend who owns a riced out civic, I'll tell him to sell while prices are high!!! Think of the money he will Make!!!
I agree. All Rice jokes aside (and I've got plenty), this is much like the average American with a Hummer having to cope with gas jumping $1 per gallon in 2 months.
Haha, my gf's parents own a asian grocery store in st. paul, they don't have any limits as long as you pay asking price.
I eat Basmati rice at least 3 times a week. 20 lb bags are about $10 at costco. I'll be needing another bag soon, hopefully the cost didn't go up much.
Welcome to the wide world of commodities. Corn and wheat skyrocketed a while ago. You can blame the Chinese. The only way to reverse this trend is to start eating Asians. Nom nom nom. My guess is that will not go over well, particularly with Asians!
^^^ Price per barrel of crude oil was 144.00 a few days ago. ^^^ What about Spanish rice, goes good with any meal, that has to hit familias with a few mouths to feed.
This is a huge deal. There's a lot rioting happening in the world right now because of the rising food prices.
I know some people are pointing fingers at us for using corn for biofuel. That cannot be the whole equation though. It takes a lot of fuel to produce food. Just think, if everyone that didn't need to drive a truck or SUV daily, drove an average car, we would save a million barrels of crude a day.
Well, massive price increases do suck. Especially for those people and countries just barely getting by. However, prices on some things have been held in check too long (now I am talking here in the US). How can the value of some things change and yet not the value of others? I mean, how much has the price of eggs changed in the last 30 years? Good for the buyer, not necessarily for the farmer. So what does that do to farming practices? Also, how much of these price changes are the result of speculators in the respective markets? Middle men getting rich off those who maybe can't afford it? I am just wondering, not making declarations. /PonderOff
Ha ha. Hilarious that soon half the world won't be able to afford to eat. I'm sick of all this "blame China" crap, too. Suddenly they want a standard of living close to what Americans have had for 70 years and they're the ones who are being selfish and wasteful. Right. The price of corn has gone way up due to this horrible idea we call E85. That makes the price of all other food go up as farms switch over to corn and grow less of everything else.
Yes, and we don't pay farmers not to farm. Where the hell do you think that corn gets planted, the dark side of somebody's *ss?
im confused at what your trying to say here. Im saying the more farmers convert to make e85 the the higher the price of edible corn there will be... Its plain simple why make food when you can make a whole ton of money on gasolina.
Uh, yeah but it still drives up prices of everything else as production capacity is switched to make whatever grade corn they use to make ethanol.
It takes even more fuel to produce fuel out of food. All this biocrap exists only because of stupid governmental subsidies and shoddy research/lobbying that made thos subsidies possible. Like few days ago into the future? Not quite that high yet. And its not the oil that is getting expensive, its the dollar that is weakening. Starving world should seriously switch from rice to potatoes. Way cheaper way to get necessary calories.
Wild rice isn't precisely the rice in question: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_rice But it IS awesome. And as far as gasoline production ethanol should be made from switchgrass but the government/lobbies need to do something with all the useless corn we have been producing for decades. I don't see the corn lobby giving any ground for farmers to produce switchgrass based merely on it being superior for ethanol production. And of course, there is no such thing as a simple answer in this complex world we have created: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethanol#As_a_fuel As it is we have too much corn in our lives. Go look at the ingredient labels on the food stuffs in your kitchen or wherever you keep it. Maybe the corn lobby and the government (for subsidies) should get sued for being complicit in "America's Obesity Problem." The fast food places have been taking hits...
I dont see how corn demand would make rice prices go up. I do however think that using corn for fuel is a good idea on paper, but not realisticly due to the fact that nearly everything we eat/drink has some kind of corn product in it. my family dosnt eat much rice but I can see how this could be shocking for families that do. also, everyone should own a metro xfi, 58mpg highway at a fraction of the cost of a new hybrid. I call it: "the hybrid of yesteryear"
Damn. As if my monthly food bill isn't too high already! Thanks for the heads up Peter, I'll have to pack sandwiches instead of onigiri for breakfast/lunch now.
My vision of the future: Hybrids gain in popularity and eventually penetrate 40% of the market. The cars eventually become old enough to require battery replacement. While the batteries are mostly recyclable, doing so is not exactly a cheap proposition and despite best efforts, there will be some harmful chemicals making it's way into the water table. Problems created: how do we minimize the harmful chemicals and reduce the cost? The solution, of course, is the staple of 3rd grade science class: The Potato Battery! The downside is that french fries will cost $4 for a regular order. At that price, folks will be buying fewer fries and thus less waste oil will be available for users of bio-diesel. That will put more pressure on other sources of bio-diesel, like soybeans. Then tofu prices will skyrocket, causing much dismay among the fans of Tofurkey. Tofurkey riots will break out around the world and both protesters will be arrested. Flip back to the positive, lower consumption of fried potatoes means a decrease in obesity. Life expectancy will go up so Medicare costs go down but Social Security costs go up until Congress decides to withhold benefits until age 93. Retirees will no longer be able to afford to drive without their SS checks, making the roads safer for everyone. I suggest investing in potatoes.
There will be riots much closer to home then. Chicago will go up in flames Damn polish and their potato vodka....
^ Yes, that was an exaggeration 144.00. The dollar is weakening, but oil is getting more expensive as well. Oh, now you pickin' on the Polish too I see? Wikipedia on potato Vodka. Looks like its a Scandinavian, Slavic, and Russian thing.
I don't get what you're trying to prove? That if potato price goes up potato vodka will too? That polish like potato vodka? That there are too many polish in Chicago?
My family isn't too pissed, we buy our rice 50 lbs at 50 bags a time, so we still have a lot left, and it does last a long time. My co-workers on the other hand have been running out to get the best deals on rice at costco since the prices went up. Rice has been part of my daily diet since I was little. I have it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It really sucks that it's going up but can't say we weren't expecting it. Eggs, milk, and bread are going up too. Produce makes me cry every time I buy it.
