My Dad is having open heart surgery here in the next week. I want to get him hooked up with Netflix to keep him entertained during all of his down time. Now I know that you can stream Netflix through Playstation and Xbox and all the game systems. does anybody have any experience with the Roku system or anything else that I may not be aware of. I'm trying to educate myself on the options that are out there in a short amount of time. Thanks in advance for your suggestions and help. Steve
For what he is doing, I hear ChromeCast is pretty okay. Personally, I have 2 AppleTv devices.. But for the cost difference, a CC wouldnt be a bad option
I got a Chromecast. Soooo cheap. Does the job just fine for me, but I don't really watch much TV so I only use it occasionally.
Another +1 for chromecast. I haven't used it with Netflix yet, but I use it for a bunch of other things. For $35 it is a tough option to pass up. Russ
From what I have read about Chromecast you need a tablet or a phone to use as a remote. Is this correct? He fails at anything technology driven.
Yeah for technology illiterate the Roku seems to work pretty well and it is cheap too. My parents have a Roku to watch Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu Plus because they got rid of cable and it works well for them. Very easy to use though the controls are a little clunky if you are used to more modern UI.
I use them all: ROKU, WII, PS3, Chrome Cast and Samsung smart TV. The ROKU is very easy to set up/use.
I have a roku because I can't afford cable and I love it. It was super easy to set up and comes with a bluetooth remote. I would highly suggest it. The roku comes with lots of channels and games you can download. I don't think I will ever go back to cable.
I have had mine for a year and a half. They don't make mine anymore but at the time it was the most expensive . I got it because I wanted the bluetooth remote. I would Deff suggest getting the one with all the options for your main TV and if you want one for a TV in the bedroom or garage just get the cheapest model.
I have the ROKU2 in the bed room because it has a headphone jack. http://www.roku.com/products/roku-2
This. If he has an iPad already, the Apple TV is a great choice. Very easy to use and several other useful features (Apple store for rentals, music streaming directly from iPad/computer, iPad mirroring, etc). It also comes with a remote and you don't need to use the device (aka iPad) to control. If you do choose to use the iPad to control, it is very easy. For example, when streaming music, using the volume buttons on the iPad adjusts the volume on the device that the Apple TV is connected to. But if he has no devices and is going for simplicity sake...Roku sounds like the better option.
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-BDP-S110...386032811&sr=1-3&keywords=sony+blu+ray+player I wanted something for Netflix with blue-ray. 68 bucks couldn't go wrong. Easy to control just use the big red Netflix button. For 10 bucks extra there is a wifi version I think. Never tried the other 2 but a guy I work with just picked up one of each off craigslist last month for half of the sticker price.
If you are leaning roko then today us your lucky day. http://sellout.woot.com/offers/roku-2-xs-media-player-w-2-remotes-1
Very much this. I bought my folks a roku bc its literally 1 (giant red "Netflix") button to push. We use chromecast, ps3, googletv, and portable devices (chromebook, tablet, phones) for Netflix at home, but Roku is really really really easy to use... easy enough for my grandma (who can't read or speak english) to use.
